Boise State to Face BYU in Provo

WHAT'S NEXT: Boise State returns to the road for another dual, competing against BYU at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16. The Broncos and Cougars will meet at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah.

SCOUTING BYU: BYU has competed twice this season, defeating Oregon State in the season opener before finishing third at the Best of Utah quad meet. The Cougars posted a 195.675 against the Beavers and a 195.725 in their quad meet. National qualifier and All-Big 12 selection Brynlee Anderson-Broekman won the beam title against Oregon State and preseason All-Big 12 selection Kylie Eaquinto won on vault and floor. Head coach Guard Young is in his 11th season at the helm, leading the Cougars to three conference titles and nine NCAA Regional appearances in his tenure.
FAMILIAR FACES: Friday's meet will be the 86th meeting between the teams, making BYU the Broncos' second-most common opponent behind Utah State. The Cougars have a 47-37-1 advantage in the all-time series. Since Tina Bird took over in 2008, the Broncos have a 31-12-1 record. The teams last met in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Regionals, tying at 195.750 apiece. BYU advanced after winning the tiebreaker, 233.650-233.400.
FIRST MEET HIGHLIGHTS: Julia Krzywanski earned Boise State's highest score of the season-opener, tallying a 9.825 on vault to finish second. She also matched her career-high on beam, tying Kristina Shchennikova for the team's top score at 9.775. Kylee Hamby returned to Boise State's bars lineup after missing the 2025 season. She posted a team-high 9.800, tying for third. Brantley Lucas, who also missed the 2025 campaign, made her collegiate debut on beam, scoring 9.600.
BRONCO DEBUTS: Miraya Nero (all-around), Lexi Caffall (vault) and Delaney Reeves (floor) each made their collegiate debut at Southern Utah. Nero is the first Bronco to compete all-around since 2023 and first to do so in her first collegiate meet since 2017.
PRESEASON FAVORITES: Boise State was tabbed first in the Mountain West Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning 27 of a possible 30 points and a pair of first-place votes. In two seasons, the Broncos have compiled a 10-1 record in conference meets.
IN THE RANKINGS: Boise State was tabbed 32nd in the WCGA Preseason Coaches' Poll. Last year, the Broncos were 32nd in the final rankings, tallying a 196.115 NQS. They ended the regular season ranked 30th overall and 20th on bars, registering a team NQS of 49.240 on the apparatus.
RING SEASON: One year after winning the inaugural Mountain West Championships, Boise State won the 2025 MW regular season crown. The Broncos boasted the league's highest NQS on bars (49.240), beam (49.080) and floor (49.105) last year.
BIRD BACK WITH THE BRONCOS: Head coach Tina Bird returns for her 19th season at the helm of the Broncos. She served as co-head coach from 2008-19 before becoming the lone head coach in 2020. From 1990-2007, she was an assistant coach for Boise State. Bird was a gymnast at Boise State from 1986-89, holding the school's floor record for four years. In her 36 years on staff, Boise State has produced 34 NCAA Regional appearances, 15 conference titles and 13 All-Americans. Bird has earned the conference coach of the year eight times, including the last two awards in the Mountain West.
ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST RETURNERS: Boise State returns three All-Mountain West selections from last season, led by Co-Freshman of the Year Kristina Shchennikova, who was also a second-team selection on bars. She earned MW Freshman of the Week five times and MW Beam Specialist of the Week three times throughout the 2025 campaign, winning three beam titles during her rookie year. Also coming back for the Broncos are two All-MW floor selections. First-team honoree Blake Pascal returns for her fifth year and second-team honoree Bridget Kemp is back for her sophomore campaign. Pascal has four-career wins on floor with Kemp adding two.
