LOS ANGELES – Boise State beach volleyball competed valiantly in its toughest weekend on the season, finishing the Battle for LA with a 1-3 record.
The Broncos (4-4), who are receiving votes in the AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll, suffered losses to three top 10 teams on the weekend, falling to No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Cal Poly and No. 8 LMU. Boise State claimed its first sweep of the season with a 5-0 mark against CSUN.
The Blue and Orange opened the weekend against No. 2 UCLA. After dropping the first match on court four, Ava Anderson and Addison Wolden won in straight sets (21-14, 21-19) to even the score. The Bruins (7-2) rattled off three consecutive victories to come away with a 4-1 win. The Broncos faced off against No. 3 Cal Poly in the final match of day one, dropping all five matches in straight sets in the defeat.
Boise State responded on Saturday, with Anderson and Wolden starting the dual against CSUN with a straight-set victory. After dropping the first set, Keira Demirjian and Charlee Ellena rallied back on court four to give Boise State a 2-0 advantage. The Broncos cruised to straight-set wins on courts two and four to grab a 4-0 lead, while Allyson Alden and Serena van der Made secured a three-set victory on the top court as Boise State completed the sweep.
In the final match of the weekend, No. 8 LMU secured the first point with a win on court four. Anderson and Wolden responded by picking up another victory from the No. 2 position to knot the score at one apiece. The Lions (5-4) claimed two more victories on courts five and three to clinch the victory. Alden and van der Made nearly pulled off a thrilling comeback from the top court, but ultimately fell 21-18, 19-21, 15-13.
