Students Rally to Back Broncos; Vandal Babes Invade Capital City for Battle; Game Begins at 2:30
BOISE, Idaho – With the cheers of a student rally and the first Homecoming celebration ringing in their ears, the Boise Junior College football warriors go forth on Public School Field of battle this afternoon to meet the threat of destruction hurled by a horde of invading young Vandals from the north.
Â
Recovered from the casualties which took two of the best players out of action in the Albion fray and primed by two weeks of intensive training, Coach Max Eiden's Broncos were ready Friday night to meet the Idaho Babes, heralded as the strongest Vandal freshman squad assembled in Moscow in the last decade. Eiden declared Friday his team was at full strength and prepared to take to the air against the invaders in the event the Idaho frosh refuse to yield yardage on the ground.
Â
Carrying 26 players, Coach Otto Anderson and a student manager, the University of Idaho's new silver and gold streamlined bus rolled into town Friday afternoon and the athletes climbed out to stretch their legs and accustom themselves to the Boise atmosphere. The trip from Moscow served as a virtual homecoming for several of the players who live in Southern Idaho. The squad is in top condition, Anderson indicated, and made the trip in fine shape.
Â
On the opposite sides of the line battling for rival causes this afternoon, there will likely be two athletes who were mates for four years during high school days. Louis Rich and Dale Cantlin teamed in the Filer High School backfield to carry the Wildcats to the heights of gridiron glory. Rich this year is the outstanding performer with the Idaho freshmen, while Cantlin shares the Junior College quarterback duties with Bob Shaw.
Â
Rich will also have another husky rival to watch this afternoon. Gus Urresti, powerful blocking Basque fullback on the Bronc eleven, has promised to outshine the Idaho star at fullbacking in today's battle. Gus like Rich is especially valuable backing up the line on defense. Rich, however, works at halfback and does a large share of the ball packing on the offense, while Urresti devotes his efforts to clearing the way or cracking the line when a short but sure gain is needed for yardage.
Â
The game, marking the last home game appearance for the Broncos, will begin at 2:30 o'clock.
