Junior College Team Springs Surprise in Defeating U. of I. Yearlings, 6-0
BOISE, Idaho – A 60-yard drive in the first quarter at Public School Field gave the Boise Junior College Broncos a 6-to-0 triumph over the University of Idaho Frosh.
Â
The Broncos were outweighed decisively but the lighter Boise linemen performed like iron men and the Frosh attack was ineffective except for a brief spurt in the last few minutes of the first half.
Â
Shaw, quarterback, brought the Broncos their touchdown after he and Urresti had lugged the ball down the field. Urresti was the power behind the drive, getting away on two line plays for long gains and effectively blocking out tacklers to give his teammates a chance.
Â
Rich Leads Vicious Drive
Â
A penalty against the Broncos ruled out the extra point.
Â
In the second quarter, Rich, Frosh halfback, went into action and for a few moments the northerners unleashed an attack which twice went close to the goal line. The first thrust came after Rich broke away in midfield for a 30-yard gain and added another long run. A short pass was completed to put the ball on the Bronco eight-yard line.
Â
Three plays brought no gain and an attempted pass on the fourth down was completed outside the playing field and the ball went over to the junior college on the 20-yard line.
Â
Gun Halts March
Â
The second Frosh drive had carried to the 18-yard line when the gun ended the half.
Â
During the entire second half, neither team was effective, although the Boise Junior College managed to work its way to the Frosh 20-yard line in the closing minutes of the game.
Â
Both lines played fine defensive ball during the last half. The desperate forward passing attack of the Frosh was ineffective. The Broncos managed to gain possession of the ball in Frosh territory in the fourth quarter on an interception.
Â
Abshear, giant Frosh end, was the defensive star for the Idaho team, and threw many of the long passes, most of which were incomplete. Rich, at halfback, made most of the Idaho yardage, while Maupin, highly touted quarter, was well bottled up. His punts were uniformly good.
Â
For the Broncos, Shaw, Cantlon and Urrestiin the backfield and Orbea, end, Rigney, tackle, and Barton, 150-pount guard, turned in sparking performances.
Â
Draws Good Crowd
Â
Nearly 2,000 persons watched the game which was perhaps the best played on the Boise field this year. The dazzling first quarter attack of the Broncos which twice carried the ball deep into Frosh territory, the counter attack by the Frosh in the second period and the determined defense by both teams in the second half made it a well-rounded exhibition.
Â
The Bronco touchdown came on the second thrust at the Idaho goal. At the opening of the game, Urresti and Shaw made good gains and a long pass from Shaw to Orbea put the ball on the 8-yard line. Three line plays gained only three yards and a pass on the fourth down was incomplete.
