Broncos Advance Three to Finals in Fall Classic

BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State men’s tennis team hosted day two of the Boise State Fall Classic on Saturday (Oct. 8) playing through the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds in the A (Blue) Draw, B (Orange) Draw and Open Division. The Broncos advance three players to the singles finals in the “A” and “B” brackets.
In the A (Blue) Draw, No. 1-seeded Andrew Bettles (sophomore) is set to take on teammate and No. 6-seeded Garrett Patton (freshman) in the singles finals. Redshirt senior Erik Sheldon advanced to the finals of the B (Orange) Draw as the No. 2 seed.
Bettles, who is ranked No. 124 in the country, made his way through the quarterfinal round by defeating Gonzaga’s Oliver Jamin, 6-1, 6-0, followed by a quick 6-3, 6-2 semifinal round win over Alvaro Nazal, Gonzaga’s top player.
Patton also picked up two wins on Saturday, defeating Jose Bedeck of Idaho in a tight 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 quarterfinal match. The freshman went on to defeat Idaho’s top player Marius Cirstea, ranked No. 89 in the nation and seeded second in the tournament, in a 7-5, 6-1 semifinal win.
Sheldon fought through three-set wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday, beginning with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win over Montana’s Ethan Vaughn. He advanced to the semifinals where he defeated No. 5-seeded Scott Sullivan of Gonzaga, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Sheldon will take on No. 1-seeded Jorge Suarez of Idaho State in the finals on Sunday.
In doubles play, Bettles and Patton joined together as the No. 2-seeded team in the “A” doubles draw. The Bronco pair fell to Eastern Washington’s James Russell and Chris Eriksson, 8-6, in the quarterfinal round.
Five additional Boise State student-athletes participated in the open tournament at the Boise State Fall Classic on Saturday.
Sunday’s singles finals are slated for a 10:30 a.m. start at the Appleton Tennis Complex. Each of the main draw and back draw finals will be played simultaneously, followed by the finals for each of the three doubles brackets.
