Broncos and Lobos Play to 2-2 Draw

10/6/2018 12:10:00 AM | Women's Soccer

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After scoring the first two goals of the game, Boise State (10-2-1, 4-0-1) was able to hang on against a frenetic New Mexico (6-5-1, 2-2-1) side that ended up scoring two second-half goals as the game eventually ended in a 2-2 tie. The team's first tie of the season still produced a point for the Broncos to maintain their first-place position in the Mountain West standings.

"We started great and had a good game plan," head coach Jim Thomas said. "We got ahead but couldn't quite get the third goal, and I thought New Mexico was really good in regaining control of the game in the second part of the first half… We were aware of what we were going to see in the second half with their barrage of long throws and corner kicks, but I was proud of the team for holding on in what was a really physical game."

Raimee Sherle officially broke the Mountain West record when she scored the 42nd goal of her career in the second minute of the game. The junior struck one minute and two seconds into the game to put the Broncos up 1-0.

The goal also puts her in a tie for first in program history for career points (92), joining Shannon Saxton (2007-10). The Meridian, Idaho native also continues to lead the NCAA in goals this season, increasing her total to 17.

Boise State's second goal came in the 17th minute when Aubree Chatterton broke through and found the back of the net off a great feed from McKenna Kynett. Chatterton played arguably her best game of the season as she also tallied the assist on Sherle's goal to start the game.

The 2-0 lead for the Broncos almost made it to the half, but the Lobos were able to get on the board in the 40th when Alexa Kirton scored to make it a 2-1 game.

The beginning of the second half carried over the New Mexico momentum from the first, as their flip throw-ins and set pieces consistently put the ball in the box. Boise State responded countless times with stops until the Lobos broke through for the equalizer in the 75th.

A long possession for New Mexico that saw the Bronco back line and Tara Fisher make several goal-saving plays eventually went against the Blue and Orange, as Jennifer Munoz was able to lift a ball from the box and into the upper-left corner of the goal to make it a 2-2 game.

Both sides pressed for the game winner in the final 15 minutes of regulation including a close look for Chatterton in the 89th, but the 2-2 score held and the game went to the first overtime.

Once again, the Lobos and Broncos both had their share of corner kicks and throw-ins near the box throughout the 10-minute period. Neither side was able to convert, however, setting the stage for the second overtime.

The second overtime was similar to the first in that there were decent chances, but the 2-2 result stood in Albuquerque.

The game featured 33 fouls and Fisher did well to tally six saves in net against 20 Lobo shots.

Boise State will now travel west and prepare to take on San Diego State, Sunday, Oct. 7 at 3:30 p.m. MT at the SDSU Sports Deck.
