Women take second, men finish third at West Regional

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Allie Ostrander's dominant victory led the Boise State women's cross country team to an automatic berth to the NCAA National Championships, Friday at Haggin Oaks Golf Course. Ostrander cruised to a victory to lead the third-ranked Boise State women to a second-place showing at the NCAA West Regional, the final qualifying meet for the national championships.

The ninth-ranked men came up 20 points shy of securing one of the two automatic bids to the national championship. However, the men have built a strong enough resume that they are likely to receive one of the first at-large bids thanks to placing third at one of the toughest regions in the nation.

In total, Boise State received eight All-West Region honors, given to athletes that finish in the top 25 of their respective races. The eight honors surpasses the previous program best of five (2017).

"I'm pleased with the effort today," head coach Corey Ihmels said. "We did what we had to do to advance to the national championship. We're excited to survive and advance, and look forward to doing better next week."

The Bronco women placed second as a team with 49 points, only five shy of first-place and No. 2-ranked Oregon. Ostrander dropped the field before the one-mile mark, putting a 25-meter gap on the chase pack early in the race.

The two-time All-American in cross country never wavered over the 6-kilometer course, easily winning by over 13 seconds in 19:09.0. She was followed by Clare O'Brien in sixth (19:33.8) in the top 10. Emily Venters (19:53.9), Alexis Fuller (20:02.9) and Maxine Paholek (20:06.5) as the Broncos placed all five of their scorers in the top 16.
This is the third time the Broncos have placed second in the region, and the fourth time they have qualified for the national championship as a team.

In the 10-kilometer men's race, Boise State found themselves in a tough position early in the race. With the pack congested at the front, the men were ranked sixth as a team at the one-mile split. The Broncos kept contact with the leaders, and raced as a pack over the course.

Addison Dehaven overcame a fall within the first kilometer to place seventh in 29:47.8 to earn all-region honors for the first time in his career. Miler Haller (29:50.8) and Elijah Armstrong (29:54.6) joined him in 14th and 19th, respectively.

Haller was able to pass two runners from Stanford in the final 20 meters of the race, securing eight-point victory over the Cardinal.

Ahmed Muhumed closed in 29th as the team's fourth runner, while Riley Campbell had his best race of the season, coming in a clutch 38th as the final scorer. The men's team finished third with 102 points, 20 back of No. 7 Washington in second, and only 25 back of No. 2 Portland in first.

The NCAA will officially announce at-large bids to the national championship on Saturday, at 3 p.m. MT.
