Fisher Impresses in Net as Boise State Rolls On

Box Score

BOISE, Idaho –
The Broncos (9-2-0, 3-0-0) played like a first-place team Friday evening, defeating Colorado State (3-5-3, 0-2-1) by a score of 3-0 at the Boas Soccer Complex. The result extends the current winning streak to five while pushing the home winning streak (including last season) to eight – tying the longest home winning streak in program history.

Boise State was particularly efficient in the attack, as all three goals were scored by the 52nd minute, allowing the high-minute players to rest of the remainder of the game in preparation for Sunday's matchup against Wyoming (7-2-2, 2-1-1).

"I'm really proud of the girls," head coach Jim Thomas said after the game. "It's not easy to build momentum and it's even harder to keep it going. I think we did a great job. Everyone that contributed today really lifted us through fatigue and lulls in the game. I'm proud of them from top to bottom."

Senior goalkeeper Tara Fisher had the game of her career in net, tallying a career-high 11 saves to pick up her sixth clean sheet of the season. The six shutouts in 2018 puts her in a tie with Janelle Flores for second place in Boise State history for most shutouts in a single season. She now only trails the 8 shutouts from Maddy McDevitt in 2013.

Raimee Sherle was once again the star offensively, tallying goals in the 35th and 40th minutes for the ninth multi-goal game of her career (fourth of the season), bringing her season goal total to 14. With 39 career goals, Sherle is just two away from tying the Mountain West record (41) held by Utah's Amy Kofoed (1999-2001).

The third and final Bronco goal came from Lillie French, as she scored her first goal wearing the Blue and Orange in the 52nd, solidifying the 3-0 result for the home team.

On a day where the teams were tied in shots (17-17) and Colorado State actually held a 12-8 advantage in shots on goal, Boise State showed its effectiveness and took advantage of a handful of quality chances.
The first 30 minutes of the game saw both sides earn decent looks, but neither was able to score the crucial first goal.

Boise State eventually struck in the 35th when Sherle received a long pass from French. The junior then put on a change-of-speed clinic, first assessing the two CSU center backs with a methodical dribble and then bursting ahead to her left to find a window. She took advantage, beating the keeper far post to make it a 1-0 Bronco lead.

Similar to last game, the Meridian, Idaho native didn't take long to tack on another as she made it a 2-0 game in the 40th. She once again received the ball in the middle of the pitch and went on to carve up the Ram back line with her speed, finding a similar slot in the box where she ripped off another left-footed shot to overwhelm the keeper.

Boise State carried the momentum into halftime and picked up right where they left off in the second, as French pushed the advantage to 3-0 with an absolute screamer from inside the box. Ashleigh Harrison did well to find French on the breakaway, who carried the ball into the box and unleashed a strike that beat the keeper high.

The Blue and Orange went on to hold off the Rams for the rest of the game. The defensive play of the game naturally came from Fisher, as Colorado State was awarded with a penalty kick in the 58th minute.

The senior choose the correct side and dove to her right to stop the oncoming PK with her body as the Broncos quickly cleared the ball and turned away the Rams on their best opportunity of the day.

"We struggled in the second half with the slick field," Thomas said. "Our possession wasn't quite as good. I think in games like this, where you're up three goals, you want to control the game and tempo more. I think we could have done a better job with it, but that's just nitpicking. It's a 3-0 and I'm happy with it."

24 different Broncos saw the field Friday with defenders Addison Standlee and Kennedi Paul tying for the team high in minutes for field players with 63.

Boise State will use tomorrow as a recovery day and quickly turn around to face Wyoming, Sunday at 1 p.m. back at the Boas Soccer Complex.
