Sherle Ties MW Record, Broncos Make it Six Straight

9/30/2018 5:50:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BOISE, Idaho – Raimee Sherle's otherworldly ability to find the back of the net once again proved to be the difference maker Sunday afternoon as the Broncos (10-2, 4-0) overcame a first half deficit against Wyoming (7-3-2, 2-2) to defeat the Cowgirls, 2-1, at the Boas Soccer Complex in front of a season-high 736 fans.

The sensational junior scored in the 40th and 54th minutes, giving her 41 career goals to tie Utah's Amy Kofoed (1999-2001) for the Mountain West record. Her 90 career points is also just two away from tying the Boise State record held by Shannon Saxton (92 points, 2007-10).

"I feel very honored and blessed to be up there with some of the best out there in the Mountain West," Sherle said after the game. "I want to give my team a huge shout-out because I wouldn't have gotten here without them and I wouldn't be in the record books without them."

The victory extends the team's winning streak to six games – tying for the longest in program history. The nine-straight home victories (dating back to last season) is also a program record.

The team's 10-2 mark is the best record through 12 games in program history and the 4-0 Mountain West record is also the first perfect four-game start to league play in program history.

Today's victory wasn't without adversity, however, as Wyoming's goal in the ninth minute gave the visitors the 1-0 lead and marked the first time Boise State has trailed at home all season. The eventual come-from-behind win was the first of the season for the Blue and Orange.

"We do two things. The first thing is we try to enjoy every single one of these (big moments)," head coach Jim Thomas said. "Then we try and solve a problem every day. Today there was a specific shift that Wyoming was doing that was allowing us to move in a certain way, and once we had coordinated it that was when you saw the dam break a little bit."

Brittney Stark deposited the lone Cowgirl goal off an assist from Summer Taube, but the moment was a turning point for the Broncos as the sense of urgency heightened and chances began to come along more consistently for the home squad.

Sherle got off a good look in the 17th while Eva Herrera gave it a go on a 20-yard shot in the 29th that was just wide, paving the way for the equalizer that ultimately came in the 40th.

Allegra Weeks gained possession of a Wyoming turnover and carried the ball 30 yards down the field before dishing it off to Sherle. The Meridian, Idaho native took on the two Cowgirl center backs with a perfect touch to her left followed by a strike with her left foot from 12 yards out to tie the game at 1-1.

The momentum continued for Boise State at the beginning of the second half as it didn't take long for Sherle to score the 21st game-winning goal of her career in the 54th on a penalty kick.

It was another strong run from Kristina Serres down the right flank and into the corner of box that triggered the call from the official, as Serres was pulled down by a Cowgirl defender in an attempt to continue her dribble towards the middle of the box.

Sherle stepped up to take the PK and choose a high, center-of-the-goal target to fool the Wyoming keeper to give the Broncos the 2-1 advantage.

Sherle almost scored her 42nd career goal on multiple occasions in the last 36 minutes of the game, as chances in the 65th and 75th minutes just eluded the reigning Mountain West Player of the Week.

While the hat trick didn't come, the Broncos properly executed in the waning minutes of the game in getting the ball to the corners to deflate any chance of a Wyoming goal.

The first-place Broncos will now prepare for a challenging road trip this coming weekend as they will take on New Mexico (6-5, 2-2), Friday, Oct. 5 (7:30 p.m. MT) and then San Diego State (4-7-1, 2-1-1), Sunday, Oct. 7 (3:30 p.m. MT). Both games will broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
