Boise State Returns to Action this Week as Broncos Head to Wyoming

WHAT IS HAPPENING

  • The Boise State swimming and diving team returns to action this weekend when the Broncos travel to Mountain West rival Wyoming this Friday and Saturday in Laramie, Wyo.
  • The weekend will consist of two days of competition on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. 
  • This meet will include both the swim and dive teams from both schools.
  • On Friday the teams will compete in an exhibition meet which will also feature some races that are not normally swam in collegiate swimming.
  • Saturday morning will be the actual regular season meet when the Broncos take on the Cowgirls.
  • This will be the 15th meeting in the series which Boise State leads 11-3 (4-1 in duals, 7-2 in invites), including a 7-0 mark at the MW Championships.  
  • Last year Boise State defeated Wyoming 187-112 in Boise during the regular season, then 1,250-981 at the MW Championships where the Broncos won the title. 

UP NEXT

  • The Boise State swimming and diving team will return home for Senior Day next week when the Broncos host the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in the regular season finale for the swimmers.
  • The Broncos and Lumberjacks will compete over two days starting on Friday (Jan. 25) at 4 p.m., then wrapping up on Saturday at 10 a.m.
  • Following the NAU meet the divers will have one more competition remaining as they close their regular season at the Air Force Diving Invitational Feb. 1-2.  

LAST TIME OUT

  • BOISE, Idaho (Dec. 8) - It has been just over a month since the Broncos last competed defeating the Nevada Wolf Pack 165-135 in Boise to extend their home win streak to 24. 
  • The Blue and Orange claimed both relay victories in the meet with the 200 medley relay A team (Ally Kleinsorgen, Laura Williams, Emmie Jennings, Abbey Sorensen) taking the title with a 1:43.05. The Boise State 400 freestyle relay A team (Cody Evans, Robin Pinger, Jennings and Sorensen) also won clocking a 3:24.63.
  • The divers had a solid day as the four Broncos combined for 11 team-points, three NCAA Zone qualifying scores and three career-best scores. Senior Cassidy Bose led the way on the 3-meter springboard tallying a career-high and NCAA Zone score of 299.48. 
  • The swimmers collected five individual titles and seven second-place finishes in the victory. Abbey Sorensen led the way recording two victories in the 50 freestyle (23.11) and 200 backstroke (2:00.29). Ally Kleinsorgen tallied a win in the 100 back (55.06). Robin Pinger won the 100 free with a 50.80, while Laura Williams brought home the 200 breast clocking a 2:18.32. 

THE MABILE ERA BEGINS

  • Christine Mabile returned to her alma mater over the summer and became the third head coach in the program's history, which is entering its 13th season in 2018-19.
  • Mabile is a 2010 alum of Boise State.
  • She did not swim for the Broncos as an undergraduate, instead she spent the four years as a volunteer assistant coach working with the team from the deck.  
  • Mabile returned to Boise State after two years as an assistant at Missouri, preceded by five years as head coach at the College of Idaho.
  • Joining Mabile on her first coaching staff are Jordan Lieberman who was an assistant at Cornell, as well as Brandon Blaisdell who returns for his fourth season as the Bronco diving coach. 

CHAMPIONSHIP TRADITION

  • Boise State's swimming and diving program has built a championship tradition in its 12-year existence. 
  • Since its founding for the 2006-07 school year the Broncos have won six conference championships, including back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. 
  • The first two titles came in 2010 and 2011 as members of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
  • Boise State's longest streak of consecutive conference championships has been three, capped off by the 2012 Mountain West title in the Broncos first year of membership.
  • Since joining the MW for the 2011-12 campaign, Boise State has won four of seven titles bringing home the hardware in 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2018.  
  • In all, the Broncos have won a conference championship six times in the last nine years. 

WIN STREAK

  • Boise State has not lost a home dual in nine-plus years dating back to Feb. 7, 2009 when they lost at the hands of Oregon State in the program's third season.
  • The Broncos victory over Nevada in December extended their home win streak in team duals to 24 straight, 1-0 in 2018-19 and 2-0 in the 2017-18 season.

BRONCOS RECORD TOP-10 TIMES/SCORES 

  • To date five Broncos have recorded school top-10 times/scores this season.
  • Freshman Marti Erlam has tallied the sixth-ranked 1-meter springboard score (302.10), as well as the third-ranked 3-meter springboard score (324.67), both accomplished in the Idaho dual meet on Oct. 13.
  • Laura Williams has turned in the fifth (2:12.92) and sixth (2:13.09) ranked times for the 200 breaststroke with both coming at the Art Adamson Invitational Nov. 14-16. 
  • Ally Kleinsorgen has recorded top-10 times in two races clocking the fifth-best (52.88) time in the 100 backstroke, while recording the fifth (1:54.99) and sixth (1:55.33) best times in the 200 backstroke, all coming at the Art Adamson Invitational.
  • Abbey Sorensen swam the seventh-best (1:55.40) time in the 200 backstroke all-time during the Art Adamson Invitational.
  • Hayley Hill turned in the ninth-ranked time for the 1,650 freestyle at the Art Adamson Invitational with a 16:38.75.
