CORVALLIS, Ore. – Boise State men's golf team recorded a solid first day of the Oregon State Invitational at Trysting Tree Golf Club, Monday.
Led by sophomore Hugo Townsend, the Broncos shot a 3-over 287 in the first round and were in third place after the first 18 holes. When the second round was suspended due to darkness, Boise State was in fifth place at 8-over, a shot back of Arizona and two strokes behind Utah. Host Oregon State leads the tournament at 18-under.
The second round is scheduled to resume at 10 a.m., Tuesday followed immediately by a shotgun start to the third round. Townsend made five birdie putts in a six-hole stretch during the first round and is 5-under for the tournament with one hole left in his second round. He is in third place, trailing Matthew Anderson of San Francisco by one shot and Oregon State's Carson Berry by three strokes.
"Hugo (Townsend) was great again today," Boise State head coach Dan Potter said. "As a team we were close. This is a course that suits but we just didn't execute as well as we're capable. Tomorrow is a big day for us."
Junior Skyler Eubank and senior Mason Schulze are each 3-over and tied for 21st with one hole left in their respective second rounds.
Senior Brian Humphreys and freshman Alex Talbot are both 8-over and tied for 46th. Humphreys has two holes remaining in his second round and Talbot has three to play.
The Broncos are 29 strokes ahead of Air Force, the only other Mountain West school in the field. The Falcons have completed their second round. Boise State is 20 and 21 shots, respectively ahead of Pac-12 programs Washington State and Oregon and 22 strokes clear of in-state rival Idaho.
Playing as an individual, senior Joe Neuheisel finished both of his rounds, Monday and is tied for 12th (E, 142).
