POCATELLO, Idaho - Boise State's Ryland McDermott and Simon Arca Costas won the consolation doubles title Friday afternoon to lead the Broncos on the opening day of the Idaho State Fall Invitational. Boise State's No. 1 team also had a strong day advancing to the semifinals of the main draw. The opening day of the tournament was strictly doubles play in which the Broncos had a solid performance going a combined 7-4 overall with one title.
McDermott and Arca Costas started the day slow falling 6-4 in their opener to the fifth-seeded tandem from Idaho State in Fynn Lohse and Lukas Ridemar.Â
However, the Bronco duo rallied after that initial setback to win three straight matches to claim the consolation championship. McDermott and Arca Costas' run began with a 6-0 victory over ISU's Filippo LaCava and Kyler Hartman, followed by a pair of tightly contested 7-5 matches over Jon Mascagni and Justin Waldman of Air Force, as well as Weber State's second-seeded team of Kris Van Wyk and Michiel Van Shoor.Â
"I thought Ryland (McDermott) and Arca (Simon Arca Costas) had a great day," said head coach Kristian Widen. "They had a slow start, but regrouped and beat the No. 2-seeded team to win the consolation final. That was a really big win for them, their opponents from Weber State were the No. 4 team in the region last year and are probably the top doubles team in the Big Sky Conference."Â
Kryvchun and Bayldon advance three rounds into the main draw collecting wins in the round of 16 and quarterfinals before falling in the semis. The duo of newcomers opened by defeating Montana State's Marcos Zelver and Manuel Monteiro 6-3. They then dispatched Weber State's Paul Ohde and Arthur Sarafim 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
Unfortunately, a slow start in the semifinal match against Idaho State's Lohse and Ridemar cost them a win as they fell to their Bengal opponents 6-4.Â
"I thought we had a pretty good day today going 7-4 in doubles," Widen said. "Our team of Kyryll Kryvchun and Blake Bayldon, who were the number one seed in the tournament, played really well and reached the semifinals. Unfortunately, they had a slow start and got broken early, then had to play catch up. That is always a problem when you play one set, you have to be ready to play because it's a sprint and hard to comeback when down."Â
Boise State's third pair of Wyatt DeMulling and Kemal Karagozoglu struggled early dropping their first two matches 7-6 to Montana's Ed Pudney and Ludvig Hallgren, then 6-3 to Weber State's Van Wyk and Van Shoor. But the Bronco tandem was able to turn it around in the afternoon closing with a pair of victories over Montana's Jack Yount and Pontus Hallgren 6-2, then beat Montana State's Zelver and Monteiro by a 6-3 score.
The Idaho State Fall Invitational starts up Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the beginning of three flights of singles play. The Broncos'Â
Kryvchun is the No. 1 seed and DeMulling the No. 4 in the top flight. Meanwhile, Arca Costas is the No. 1 seed followed by Bayldon as the No. 2 seed in the second flight, McDermott is the top seed in the third flight.Â
