FAIRFAX, Calif. – Boise State sophomore Hugo Townsend carded a 4-under 67 in the final round to finish sixth at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Tuesday.
The Boden, Sweden native was solid all day with six birdies and two bogeys. He finished 12-under (65-69-67-201) and his effort led the Broncos to a fourth place finish (-23, 829), their best performance of the season. It was the ninth-career top 10 for Townsend and his second-best career finish.
"It was a great tournament for Hugo (Townsend)," Boise State head coach Dan Potter said. "He looked awesome all three rounds and that's a good finish among some really good players."
Junior Skyler Eubank recovered from a slow start to shoot 66, the best round of the day by a Bronco. He was 1-over after consecutive bogeys on holes 2 and 3 before playing 6-under the rest of the round, including an eagle on 13 and three-straight birdies to finish his day.
"Skyler's (Eubank) finish today was huge for us," Potter said. "We didn't seem to have as much gas today, so for him to make all those birdies at the end was big. It was a much improved team effort and hopefully something we can build off with two more events to go this fall."
Eubank earned a tie for 26th at 4-under (73-70-66-209). The Broncos were one stroke better than Long Beach State, three back of St. Mary's and four behind California. Pepperdine won the event at 43-under (809). Boise State bested Mountain West rivals San Diego State and San Jose State by six shots, Nevada by 15 and Fresno State by 27.
Senior Brian Humphreys made an eagle on the par 5, 15th hole to highlight his round. He was 4-over for the day and tied for 31st at 2-under (67-69-75-211). Freshman Alex Talbot earned a tie for 36th at 1-under (71-69-72-212) in his collegiate debut. One hole in the final round cost Mason Schulze and the senior wound up tied for 56th at 3-over (70-69-77-216).
The Broncos are back in action Oct. 14-15 at the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis, Ore.
