KA'ANAPALI, Hawaii – Led by sophomore Hugo Townsend, the Boise State men's golf team turned in a solid first day at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, Friday.

Townsend made six birdies on his way to a 5-under 66 and the Boden, Sweden native is tied for eighth place. The Broncos are 9-under (275) as a team and are tied for seventh in a 20-team field that features eight schools ranked in the top 45 nationally.

The Broncos trail No. 5 Oklahoma (-16), No. 23 UCLA (-15), No. 44 Kansas (-15), No. 37 Liberty (-13), the Big 12's West Virginia (-11) and No. 18 Washington (-10).

Boise State is tied with No. 15 Clemson. Schools chasing the Broncos include No. 19 Georgia (-7), No. 31 South Carolina (-7), and Mountain West foes Air Force (-8) and Wyoming (+4).

"The guys got off to a good start," Bronco head coach Dan Potter said. "We have always looked comfortable on this course and we love this trip. We had a big hiccup in the middle of the round with some penalty shots, but I was pleased with how we played through it. It was one of those days that could have been a lot better, but is still a solid way to start."

Senior Brian Humphreys was consistent throughout the day and finished at 3-under (68) and tied for 23rd. Senior Joe Neuheisel overcame a triple bogey on his eighth hole to finish at 1-under (70). He is tied for 47th.

Senior Mason Schulze rallied to finish at even par 71 with a pair of birdies over his final-five holes. He is tied for 57th. One bad hole cost Skyler Eubank and he finished at 4-over 75 and tied for 100th.

The second round is scheduled for a shotgun start, Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Mountain.
