BOISE, Idaho (11/13/2019) - Boise State head men's tennis coach Kristian Widen announced Wednesday the signing of Caden Moortgat (Plano, Texas) to a National Letter of Intent. The Texas high school standout is a two-time 6A state champion from the Dallas metro area. Moortgat is the son of former Boise State head coach Jim Moortgat and brother to current Bronco women's tennis player Camryn.

Caden brings a lot to our tennis program," said Widen. "He not only is a phenomenal tennis player, but Caden is a great person with integrity, in addition to being a great competitor who will always give the team 100 percent. He will bring captain material and leadership from day one. He is very unselfish and is looking to do more with his tennis in the future, so he will work hard day in and day out."

In October Moortgat helped his Plano West High School team to a runner-up finish at the Texas 6A Team State Championship where he won his singles contest in the title match.

Moortgat is a six-time Texas 6A All-State selection, two-time state champion and four-time team captain in high school while competing for the Plano West Wolves. He won the 2018-19 Texas 6A mixed doubles championship and was a member of the Wolves state team championship in 2016-17. In addition, Moortgat also reached the state semifinals in boys doubles twice.

His United States Tennis Association (USTA) rankings include being ranked as high as No. 80 nationally and No. 5 in the Texas Section. Moortgat is a two-time winner of a USTA National Level 2 doubles championship tournaments, took third at a USTA National Level 2 singles championship and was a 2019 USTA National Champions 5.0+.

Moortgat was born in Boise and grew up loving the Broncos. In 2014 his family moved to Plano, Texas. He has played in numerous junior tennis tournaments throughout the United States and is a four-star recruit according to the Tennis Recruiting Network.

What his coaches said about Moortgat

"Caden is the kind of player every coach wants on his team," said Plano West head coach Morgen Walker. "A natural leader, he is the kind of player who makes those around him better through his attitude and work ethic. His impact on the Plano West tennis team will be missed."

"I am super excited for Caden to commit to Boise State. From my personal experience, Boise has a great tennis community that bleeds blue and orange and Caden will fit in well," said his club coach and former Bronco All-American Lief Meineke. "With the signing of Caden Moortgat, Boise State is getting a real gem. Caden has been successful with an aggressive style of play that can really put a lot of pressure on his opponents. He is also an incredible competitor and embraces the big moments. Just to name a few of Caden's clutch moments: he led his high school team to the very prestigious Texas state championship in his freshman year; he also won the deciding match to win the national title for his 5.0+ USTA team this year."
