WHAT'S HAPPENING
- Boise State swimming and diving is on the road this weekend headed to Columbia, Mo., for the Mizzou Invite hosted by the Missouri Tigers Wednesday through Friday at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. This will be the fifth time that the Broncos have competed at this prestigious meet and the first since fall 2012. Boise State placed second at the last three Mizzou Invites it competed in.Â
- SWIMMING FIELD: Competing in swimming at this year's version of the invite are 10 schools including: Arkansas, Boise State, BYU, Drury, No. 9 Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma Baptist, San Diego State, Truman State and Wyoming.Â
- DIVING FIELD: The diving competition will see nine schools: Boise State, BYU, Cincinnati, Drury, Iowa State, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Wyoming.
- THE FORMAT: The meet will be conducted in a invitational/championship format with one champion. This will be the first invitational format meet that the Broncos have swam in this season after four dual format meets.Â
BOISE STATE STORYLINES
ABOUT THE BRONCOS- The Broncos enter the week at 3-2 overall and are coming off a dual loss 187-113 at Mountain West rival Nevada on Nov. 2nd. Prior to that, Boise State opened with a pair of home wins against Wyoming (Oct. 11) 186-108 and Idaho (Oct. 12) 221-78, then followed with a road split at a San Diego State tri-meet (Oct. 18) falling to the Aztecs (158-134) and defeating Pepperdine (252-43).Â
- Boise State is in its second season under the direction of head coach Christine Mabile who has guided the Blue and Orange to a 19-7 record in all competitions, including 3-2 in duals this season.Â
- Christine Mabile returned to her alma mater (2010) during the summer of 2018 to become the third head coach in program history, which is entering its 14th season in 2019-20.
- She did not swim for the Broncos as an undergraduate, instead she spent the four years as a volunteer assistant coach working with the team from the deck. Â
- Mabile returned to Boise State after two years as an assistant at Missouri, preceded by five years as head coach at the College of Idaho.
- Joining Mabile on her first coaching staff are Jordan Lieberman who was an assistant at Cornell, as well as Brandon Blaisdell who returns for his fifth season as the Bronco diving coach.
- Sophomore Marti Erlam has opened the campaign solid having already qualified for the NCAA Zone E Championships in March on both springboards ... she has recorded two of the top-seven scores in the Mountain West Conference on the 1-meter springboard with her top score being a career-high 307.20 against Wyoming (Oct. 11), the dive is ranked fifth in conference ... on the 3-meter springboard her top score is 316.80 (10th MW) also accomplished against Wyoming.Â
- Junior Tatum Thompkins has also qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships in March on both springboards with career-highs on the 1-meter (267.15) and 3-meter (306.08), both versus Wyoming.
- Senior Robin Pinger has won five races this fall including the 50-yard freestyle twice with her top time coming against Idaho (Oct. 12) with a 23.77, the fourth-best time in the MW this season ... she also won the 100-yard breaststroke versus Wyoming (Oct. 11) with a 1:05.04 and the 200-yard IM at 2:06.93 ... Pinger also won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.21) against Idaho.
- Junior Hayley Hill has been dominant in the 1,000-yard freestyle winning all three races she has swam with a season-best 10:17.08 at the San Diego State Tri-Meet (Oct. 18), ranked fifth in the MW this year.
- Sophomore Katie McCoy has been impressive in the individual medleys for Boise State winning three of the four races she has competed in ... McCoy won the 200 IM at the San Diego State Tri-Meet with a 2:03.58, first in the MW to date ... in the 400 IM she has won twice with a career-best 4:26.56 at the Nevada (Nov. 2) dual, top time in the MW.Â
- Junior Molly Hogg has been solid in the backstrokes winning four races combined between the 100-yard and 200-yard back ... in the 100 back she has a top time of 56.24 swam against Wyoming in the opener, sixth in the MW ... in the 200 back she has a top time of 2:01.45 also versus Wyoming, ranked third in the league. Â Â
- Boise State returns five experienced seniors to this year's roster in Emmie Jennings, Jamie Nats, Robin Pinger, Alyssa Schultz and Georgia Zacest.Â
- Three of the seniors, Jennings, Pinger and Schultz, earned All-Mountain West honors as juniors in 2019.Â
- Jennings earned all-conference honors as a member of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams ... she was also among the Boise State contingent that qualified for the 2019 CSCAA National Invitational Championships last March.Â
- Pinger earned six all-conference honors last year in the 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley, as well as being a member of the three relays the 400 freestyle and both medleys ... She was also among the nine member contingent that competed at the 2019 CSCAA NIC.Â
- Schultz was All-MW in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
- In addition to the three current seniors who were All-MW, the Broncos return three others who received all-conference accolades in current junior Hayley Hill and current sophomores Marti Erlam and Lauren Vitort.
- Hill earned two All-MW honors in the 500-yard freestyle and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
- Lauren Vitort tallied two all-conference honors as well, they were in the 200-yard free and 800 free relay.
- Both Hill and Vitort were part of the Boise State contingent to the CSCAA NIC.Â
- Marti Erlam earned All-MW honors on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards at the conference championships ... she reached the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships where her results counted towards Boise State's CSCAA NIC team score.
