Boise State shutout Boston College in five innings, but fell to Northwestern State in the bottom of the seventh
BOSTON COLLEGE RECAP
Boise State got five extra-base hits to power their way to a shutout victory over Boston College to open the season. The win moves the Broncos to 6-5 in season openers.
Kelsey Broadus was effective in the circle, striking out four batters in four innings of action. Micaela Leal struck out the first two batters she faced in an inning of relief, while th3 duo got mistake-free softball from her teammates behind her. Boise State committed zero errors on the day.
Senior Rebekah Cervantes hit the 40th double of her career and added a triple against the Eagles. Boise State got three-straight at-bats with an RBI in the top of the fourth, as Ashlyn Adams, Bradie Fillmore and Cervantes all drove in their teammates.
The Broncos scored four runs in the fourth inning to take the 8-0, run-rule victory.
The game was delayed for almost two hours, starting in the bottom of the second inning, due to a combination of lightning strikes and sleet.
NORTHWESTERN STATE RECAP
The inclimate weather that plagued Boise State carried over into the second game of the afternoon. Moments before the first pitch, the game was put into a two-hour weather delay due to torrential rain.
Boise State came out swinging, getting a lead-off triple from Kora Wade. That offensive production would not carry over throughout the remainder of the game, however. The Broncos left six runners on base in the game, and went 1-for-10 at the plate with RBI opportunities.
Wade scored on the next at-bat thanks to an RBI groundout from Adams. The team added a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double from Alison Seng.
The Broncos went into the bottom of the seventh with a 2-1 lead, needing three outs to hold on for the victory. Starting pitcher Gianna Mancha walked Northwestern State's Codi Vernace. Maggie Black went to bunt, but the ball popped up into foul territory, being met by a streaking Seng for the out.
Mancha struck out the next batter for the second out, inching the Broncos closer to a victory. The next batter would send a double into right center, scoring Vernace from first. A single up the right side would bring the winning run home, shutting the door on a 2-0 start to the season for Boise State.
Due to weather, the remainder of the schedule for the Texas Classic was amended.
