Win streak extended to 17-straight; best 20-game start in program history
STOCKTON, Calif. – The Boise State softball program extended its program-best win streak to 17-consecutive games, sweeping Fairleigh Dickinson and Sacramento State to close out the Louisville Slugger Tournament.
The Broncos (18-2) have gone 4-0 each of their last four tournaments, and are off to the best 20-game start in program history.
Boise State opened the day with a come-from-behind victory over Fairleigh Dickinson, 9-2. With the game tied a 2-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos unloaded with seven runs in the frame. A two RBI single from Bradie Fillmore gave the Blue and Orange all the runs they would need to win the contest, but Boise State would only continue their rout of the Knights (4-8). Fillmore's single started a chain of three-straight RBI singles for Blue and Orange.
With two runners on base, Jessica McKay homered to empty the bases and give the Broncos the 9-2 lead.
Despite the blemish in the second inning, the Boise State defense, led by Rainey Dyreson in the circle, was phenomenal throughout the game. Dyreson and Co. had three-consecutive innings of not allowing a Fairleigh Dickinson batter on base, before an error in the infield with two outs in the top of the seventh inning broke the streak.
Dyreson struck out three batters, allowing only three hits and one walk in 6.0 innings of action. Micaela Leal closed out the seventh inning, striking out one.
The Knights got two runs on the board in the top of the second inning on a two RBI double. The Broncos would trail until a solo home run from Morgan Lamb tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third.
Boise State would not need the late-game heroics to defeat Sacramento State (8-9) later in the afternoon. Despite the Hornets taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first, the Broncos immediately answered with a RBI single from Wade. Justene Molina would hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth, and from then on the Broncos wouldn't look back.
Wade doubled down in the right field line for a RBI in the top of the sixth, while Fillmore homered in the top of the seventh for a 5-2 lead. McKay would seal the game with a two RBI single in the same inning to give Boise State a 7-2 lead.
Despite Sacramento State adding a run in the final frame, it was not enough to keep the Broncos from another win.
At 18-2, Boise State will now enter a five-game road swing this upcoming week. The defending Mountain West champions will open conference play on the road at UNLV (March 15-17), before playing Harvard and Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Calif., March 19.
