VANCOUVER, Wash. - Janell Walley and Kendra Bodine won two matches Saturday to remain undefeated on the season as Boise State rolled to a pair of 4-1 victories over Oregon and Portland on the opening day of the Pacific Northwest Invitational in Vancouver, Wash. Walley and Bodine went three sets to win at No. 2 pair versus Oregon, then moved up to No. 1 pair against Portland where they cruised to victory to move to 5-0 on the year.Â
"I'm extremely happy with the way the team played today, especially after traveling to Vancouver from Boise this morning and then playing two matches," said Boise State head coach Allison Buck. "We knew coming in here that it was going to be a tough tournament with three quality teams. We are 2-0 so far on the weekend, which we are excited about, but we still have a very good Washington team to play tomorrow. Facing two Pac-12 schools in Oregon and Washington is big for us, but I feel we are ready for the challenge and we're looking forward to facing the Huskies."Â
In two new pairings this year both Kylee Johnson and Ellie McDonald, as well as, Kiley Lewis and Jensen Allen went undefeated on Saturday at No. three and four pairs, respectively. The fourth duo to win both contests was Kenna Hanses and Maya Watkins at No. 5 pair. Â Â
The two victories improved the Broncos to 4-1 overall with a contest against the Washington Huskies on the slate for Sunday morning in the championship match of the tournament. The Huskies defeated Portland 4-1 and Oregon 3-2 on Saturday to move to 2-3 on the year.Â
Â
The No. 2 tandem for Boise State of Kendra Bodine and Janell Walley battled through three tightly contested sets to defeat the Ducks' Emily Mattoon and Maddy Silberger-Franek 21-18, 18-21, 15-13.Â
On court three, Kylee Johnson and Ellie McDonald handled their opponents easily recording a 21-17, 21-15 victory.Â
Kiley Lewis and Jensen Allen teamed up at No. 4 pair where they came away with a three-set win 21-14, 12-21, 15-10 over Oregon's Lauren Page and August Raskie. Like Johnson and McDonald, this was the first match of the season that Lewis and Allen were teamed up together for a competition.
The last victory of the match came from the No. 5 team featuring Maya Watkins and Kenna Hanses. The Bronco tandem collected their first win (1-1) of the season beating Elise Ferreria and Carly Wallace by identical 21-19 scores to take it in two sets.Â
Seniors Sabryn Roberts and Morgan Hughes suffered their first setback of the season falling at No. 1 pair 21-16, 21-11.
Â
Playing in the second slot for the first time was Roberts and Hughes moving down one position. Unfortunately, they fell in a three-set battle to Portland's Emma Scanlan and Morgan Robinson 17-21, 21-13, 15-13.Â
The remainder of the roster stayed the same with McDonald and Johnson steam rolling Portland's No. 3 pair 21-14, 21-11. Â
Playing on court four for Boise State was Jensen Allen and Kiley Lewis. The Bronco duo also won easily in straight sets 21-13, 21-16.Â
