Boise State Heads to Pacific Northwest Invitational to Face Oregon, Portland and Washington

WHAT'S HAPPENING: Boise State beach volleyball takes its 2-1 mark into the second weekend of competition at Vancouver, Wash., for the Pacific Northwest Invitational featuring the Broncos, their host Portland (0-0), as well as Oregon (0-3) and Washington (0-3). The tournament will take place at Frenchman's Bar Regional Park. This tournament includes the only four northwestern schools who sponsor beach volleyball.
LOOKING AT THE OPPONENTS: Looking at the three opponents, Portland opens the season this weekend, while Oregon and Washington both went 0-3 last weekend in Tucson, Ariz., to open their seasons.Â
LAST TIME OUT FOR BOISE STATE: Boise State went 2-1 in its opening action of the 2019 season, picking up wins of 4-1 and 5-0 over Benedictine and Colorado Mesa, respectively, before falling, 3-2, to host Arizona in Tucson. The Broncos' No. 1 and 2 pairs of Sabryn Roberts/Morgan Hughes and Janell Walley/Kendra Bodine, respectively, each went 3-0 to highlight the weekend.
COACH BUCK: This is head coach Allison Buck's inaugural season at the helm of the beach volleyball team after two seasons as the assistant. Buck is assisted by Hayley Peterson, a 2017 graduate from Idaho State.
RETURNERS: The Broncos return seven letterwinners from the 2018 squad that went 4-11 overall. Senior Sabryn Roberts will bring experience to the 2019 team with three years with both the indoor and beach teams under her belt. Boise State will also return juniors Jensen Allen, Janell Walley and Kenna Hanses, all part of both volleyball teams. Finally, sophomores Drew Hanneman, Kylee Johnson, Kiley Lewis and Maya Watkins will return for their second year with Bronco beach volleyball.
NEW FACES: The Broncos have added seven new players to the beach roster. This includes five freshmen:
Danielle Boss, a 5-9 player from Palm Desert, Calif. Boss played on the Broncos' indoor team and was a two-time honorable mention All-Desert Valley League honoree in high school.
Shae Duffy, 6-2, Hood River, Ore. Another Bronco indoor player, Duffy appeared in 16 matches and was a two-time Oregon 5A All-State honoree at Hood River Valley High School. She was named the Columbia River Conference MVP as a junior.
Ellie McDonald, 5-10, Gilbert, Ariz. McDonald's high school team went a perfect 8-0 in the regular season and 12-1 overall, winning the state title.
Carly Moreno, 6-1, Yorba Linda, Calif. Another prospect from the indoor team, Moreno finished the 2018 season with six service aces, 35 kills and 41 digs.
Alyssa Wissinger, 6-2, Tempe, Ariz. Wissinger redshirted her first season with the indoor team and was a first-team All-Metro Region selection as a junior at Corona Del Sol High School.
In addition, the Broncos add graduate transfer Kendra Bodine (5-10) from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. The outside hitter was named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American honorable mention and was named to the the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Â volleyball team for her third-straight season. Bodine led the GNAC in kills (453) and was seventh in hitting percentage (.276) during the 2017 season. She also garnered second team GNAC All-Conference Commissioner's Association recognition. Bodine sits tied for seventh all-time in the GNAC record book with her stellar attack percentage (.655). She also is ranked second in the GNAC in career kills (1,491).
Senior Morgan Hughes will play her first beach season with the Broncos but has four years of indoor volleyball experience, one at Boise State after transferring from Saint Mary's College. During the Broncos' 2018 indoor season, Hughes recorded 16 kills and blocks with six service aces.
