Fillmore bats in three runs as Boise State (24-8, 4-6 MW) takes the opener over Utah State (13-20, 4-8 MW)
The Broncos (24-5, 4-6 MW) powered through a 30-minute rain delay in the top of the first inning to defeat Utah State, 10-6 in the series opener. Junior Bradie Fillmore went 3-for-3 from the plate as the Broncos scored in five separate innings.
Fillmore scored twice while batting in three runs, and also drew a walk. Her two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth put the Broncos up 10-5 over the Aggies (13-20, 4-8 MW).
"It feels so nice to get back into the win column," Fillmore said. "It was especially nice to have the whole team be involved in the win today. Everybody was getting into it — it wasn't just a couple of people."
Rebekah Cervantes added a two-run home in the second inning as the Broncos batted in nine runs on the day. Jessica McKay was also 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs.B6 | 🐴💣 are raining at DLP harder than the rain itself!! @OhBrades sends a 2-run shot across the fence in center field to push the Boise State lead to 10-5!#BleedBlue pic.twitter.com/1EFgSZSlEx

In the top of the first inning, Utah State was able to get a pair of runners on base on walks before a torrential downpour forced the grounds crew to bring out the tarp. After 30 minutes of delay, both teams returned to the field. Starting pitcher Kelsey Broadus would load the bases, but got the Broncos out of the inning without giving up a run.
Boise State would take the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a RBI single from Fillmore, and scored four more in the second inning thanks to defensive miscues by the Aggies. The Broncos' first six runs of the game would all come with two outs.
The Aggies responded with a three-run top of the fourth inning to make it a 7-4 ballgame, but Boise State would do enough to get the win. Broadus would be the pitcher of record, throwing her fourth complete game of the year. She struck out five batters in 7.0 innings of action, and allowed only two earned runs.
With the series-opening victory, the Broncos climbed back into the win column to end a three-game losing streak. It was also the first victory for the team in 12 days.WATCH | Karlee Johnson showing off her athleticism over there at 2nd base, making the diving stop and getting the out at first to end the inning! "We've been through a lot this year with rain delay," head coach Maggie Livreri said. "We've experience a lot of adversity so there's nothing new there. The girls were hungry today and I think they were ready to go. They really needed the downtime and the break, and they got it done today.
The series will continue tomorrow at 4 p.m.
