Broncos Complete Sweep with 12-8 Victory

4/14/2019 4:42:00 PM | Softball

Bradie Fillmore batted in four runs on two home runs to lead Boise State (26-8, 6-6 MW) to the series sweep over Utah State

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State softball lit up the scoreboard all weekend long, and Sunday afternoon was no exception as the Broncos defeated Utah State 12-8 in front a facility-record 604 fans at Dona Larsen Park. The win gives Boise State (26-8, 6-6 MW) their first sweep of the season, and pulls them to .500 in conference play on the year.

The Broncos scored 10-or-more runs in all three games of a Mountain West series for the first time since doing so against Utah State last season (March 16-18, 2018).

"I'm happy for the team — hitting is always contagious and it was great to see them feed off of that," head coach Maggie Livreri said. "The offense paced it for us today. All the way around the offense paced us this weekend."

Bradie Fillmore continued her dominant weekend for the Blue and Orange with home runs in the third and fourth innings. She would end the day 2-for-4 and four runs batted it. The junior ended the weekend batting .667 (6-for-9) with four home runs and nine runs batted in.

"Bradie came in with tremendous experience," Livreri said. "She wanted to transfer home. She brought great experience and just had to get comfortable."

Boise State scored in five separate innings, putting up a three-runs in the first thanks to a RBI single by senior Rebekah Cervantes. Junior Jessica McKay followed that up with a two-RBI single of her own, giving the Broncos a lead they would never relinquish.

A five-run bottom of the fourth inning busted the game open for Boise State. Kora Wade flashed her speed, stealing second base and then reaching home from second on a RBI single up the right side from Ashlyn Adams. Cervantes doubled into the gap in left field to bat in Adams, and advanced to third on the throw. McKay would get on base, setting up a one-out home run from Fillmore to empty the bases.

Gianna Mancha struck out five batters in only 4.0 innings of action from the circle. After she was pulled entering the top of the fifth, Utah State would battle back with three runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

After a scoreless top of the sixth, Adams opened the bottom of the inning with a stand-up double. She was able to jog home after Cervantes launched a homer over the left-field wall to extend their lead back to 12-5.

To close things down in the seventh, the Broncos called on junior Kelsey Broadus. She grabbed the first two outs before giving up a three-run shot to left field before settling down and striking out the last batter to complete the sweep.
