BRONCOS TAKE A TWO-MATCH TOUR AROUND THE SOUTHWEST
The Boise State women's tennis team hits the road this week as they travel south to take on UTEP on Friday, April 5, and Mountain West foe New Mexico on Sunday, April 7.Â
The first match in El Paso will put the Broncos against a Miner squad that is searching for some momentum heading into the final stretch of the season. UTEP has faced four MW opponents in Utah State, Wyoming, Colorado State and New Mexico this season, losing all four contests. Interestingly enough, those same four opponents make up the remaining MW schedule for the Broncos.
Â
After the match in El Paso, the Broncos will head to Albuquerque to take on the Lobos, who are 1-1 in conference play this season. In matches against common opponents this year, Boise State has gone 1-2 while New Mexico has gone 0-3. The Broncos' win came over Colorado on Feb. 24.
Â
WHAT'S THE SCOOP
The Broncos will be looking to capture their first true road win of the season this weekend. The team has gone 0-4, but the majority of the matches have been tight contests.Â
The team seeks to capture some of the success it has seen in home matches, as the Blue and Orange is 7-1 when playing at home this season.
Â
LAST TIMEÂ OUT
The Broncos swept Whitman 7-0 in their first outdoor home match of the season last Saturday, March 30. Without dropping a set, the Broncos were able to protect home court behind strong singles performances from Frankie Trella and Vanessa Timm, who won 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1, respectively. The result marked the fourth sweep the Broncos have dealt this season.Â
PLAYER TO WATCH
The player to watch this weekend is junior Lilian Poling. Poling is fresh off her 50th career singles victory after she defeated Andrea Gu of Whitman 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday. Along with her stellar play in singles – where she leads the team with 11 wins – Poling has also been a leader in doubles where she has gone 11-1 playing at the No.1 spot with Wilhelmina Palmer.Â
HEAD COACH BECK ROGHAAR
With a career record of 106-86 and six winning seasons, Roghaar has made his mark on Boise State in his ninth season with the program. He became the second coach in program history to reach 100 wins on January 19, 2019 after a 6-1 win against Idaho State. Last season he coached the team to a 14-8 record and the Mountain West Mountain Division regular-season title after going 5-0 against divisional opponents. The 2011 WAC Coach of the Year continues to build a rising Boise State program that has been built on the values of toughness and passion.Â
