Broncos Fall to Aggies in MW Championship Quarterfinal

4/25/2019 8:25:00 PM | Men's Tennis

FRESNO, Calif.  – The Boise State men's tennis team came up on the short end of a 4-0 score to Utah State in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Championship Thursday afternoon at Fresno, Calif. Boise State lost the doubles point, then watched as the second-seeded Aggies claimed four straight singles victories. The loss ends the Blue and Orange's season with its first winning record in three seasons going 11-10 on the year.

The Broncos were never able to gain any momentum against Utah State as the Aggies won the two first doubles matches on courts one and three to take the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead.

The Aggies held onto that momentum and rode it to three straight singles wins on courts three, six and one to sink the Broncos' season. Freshman Simon Arca Costas led the Broncos on the day taking his match to three sets before it was stopped at 6-1, 3-6, 0-1 once the team point was decided. Arca Costas finishes his debut season at Boise State with an impressive and team-best mark of 24-11 overall and 13-4 duals record.

After dropping the first set, freshman Simon Stenlund rallied to take a 5-3 lead in the second, only to see his opponent Duro Opacic comeback for the win 6-2, 7-5. Stenlund ended his first campaign at 18-9 overall in singles.

Wyatt DeMulling also battled back after falling in set one 6-2 to Rithvik Bollipalli and was tied at 5-5 in the second when the contest was abandoned. DeMulling concluded his junior season at 22-10 overall and 13-4 in duals this spring.

This concludes the 2018-19 campaign for Boise State as the Broncos turn their attention to next year when they return six veterans from this spring with a host of new faces joining coach Kristian Widen for his second season in charge.
