Broncos Match Best Ever Start to Season With 4-0 Route of Aggies

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State women's soccer team improved to 3-0 on the season thanks to a strong-second half en route to a 4-0 shutout of the New Mexico State Aggies at Boas Soccer Complex Friday evening.
It was a warm one at Boas with temperatures in the mid-90's. It was a factor early explains head coach Jim Thomas. "It was really really tough today, it was hot and we didn't really have the spark to break them down and it took them going to a certain place to get it done and now we know when we are playing well but it's not quite enough to win, we have another level we can go to in order to get the win."
Sophomore Sydney Smith collected her third win of the season and her second clean sheet, recording four saves along the way.
It was a grind early with neither side able to gain an advantage through the first half. It wasn't until the 68th minute when Lillie French fed the ball ahead to Raimee Sherle at midfield. Sherle then drove down the left side before sending it into the net just past the New Mexico State keeper.
French now sits at a goal and an assist each on the season, while Sherle now sits at four goals on the year and 49 in her career. That mark ties her for most career goals by any active player in the NCAA.
Four minutes later in the 80th minute Sherle would serve up an assist of her own with a corner kick from the right side which, senior Raven Sweeney headed home to put the Broncos up by two. Sweeney now sits at two goals on the season.
In the 82nd minute it was junior Aubree Chatterton who chalked up her first goal of the season, thanks to a feed from the freshman Grace Kaufman-Fuller. Chatterton drove the ball into the box, sidestep the keeper and finish with her left foot to make it a 3-0 Bronco lead.
Finally, in the 86th minute Sherle got another good look at the goal, firing off a shot from the left side of the box that the keeper was just able to deflect. However, the freshman Keile Hansen reacted quickly collecting the ricochet and hammering it into the net to cap off a four goal, 18-minute scoring barrage from the Broncos. Hansen's goal is the first of her collegiate career.
"Everything is growing at this point, we are only three games in," said Thomas. "We have got to get cleaner in the back passing. In the second half we weren't being pressed on the ball as much as at the start, and we were a little jumpy at the back so we will continue to invest in that moving forward."
With the win today the Broncos have matched their best start to a season since 2004. The Broncos will look to make their first ever 4-0 start to a season when they visit Pocatello, Idaho, for a match with the Idaho State Bengals, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. MT.
