Broncos Open Season Tied for 10th After Day One at Air Force

USAFA, Colo. – Boise State opened its 2019-20 men's golf season with a 5-over round and the Broncos sit in 10th place after the first day of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational.

In an 18-team field, Boise State is three shots back of fifth place Weber State (+2) and 14 strokes behind host and tournament leader Air Force (-9).

Hugo Townsend turned in the best day individually for the Blue and Orange with a 1-under 71. The sophomore from Boden, Sweden got off to a good start with a birdie on the par 4 second hole. He added birdies on seven and nine and was even par over the final 10 holes.

Skyler Eubank shot an even par 72 and is tied for 19th. A junior from College Station, Texas, Eubank recovered from a slow start that had him 3-over through five holes. After three-consecutive pars, Eubank carded four birdies over the final-11 holes to place in the top 20.

"We weren't as sharp today I would have hoped or expected to be," Boise State head coach Dan Potter said. "However, there are some unique characteristics of this course. We now have another day under our belts and are more comfortable. Hopefully, we can come out with a bit more course knowledge and better execution. It will take a total team effort to sneak up closer to the lead going into the final round."

Both Michael Rizzo and Brian Humphreys are tied for 60th after a first round 75 (+3). Rizzo was one-over on the front nine and Humphreys was even at the turn before both found trouble on the back nine.

After struggling to a 4-over through 10 holes, Mason Schulze managed to play even through the final-eight holes and is tied for 70th.

The second round begins Saturday at 7:30 a.m.
