USAFA, Colo. – Junior Skyler Eubank carded a 1-under 71 in the final round of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, Sunday to lead the Boise State men's golf team to an eighth place finish (+6, 870).
In an 18-team Division I field, the Broncos bested seven schools in the West in their season-opening tournament, including Mountain West rival Utah State. Boise State was seven shots out of fifth place and 16 behind tournament winner Colorado (-10, 854).
Eubank finished tied for ninth at 3-under (72-71-70-213) to record his third-career top 10 finish.
"Skyler didn't have his best game from tee to green, but found a way to score," Bronco head coach Dan Potter said. "He was scrappy."
Sophomore Hugo Townsend recovered from a 2-over front nine to play even par the rest of the way. He finished 2-under (71-69-74-214) and in a tie for 12th. The native of Sweden has earned nine top 25 finishes in 12-career events.
"Hugo played solid all week, he just missed a couple of key tee shots today that cost him," Potter said.
Potter added, "This was not the start to the season we hoped for as a team. It was not a disaster, but I was surprised we didn't put together some better rounds. We have a week to get some practice and head to Gold Mountain for the Husky Invitational. We'll need to be sharper from top to bottom."
Senior Brian Humphreys was 1-over Sunday and finished 36th (75-71-73-219). Senior Mason Schulze notched an eagle on the par 5, 16th hole, and finished tied for 59th (76-75-74-225). Senior Michael Rizzo rounded out the Broncos' lineup in 88th (75-80-78-233).
Next up, the Broncos will take part in the Husky Invitational, hosted by Washington, Sept. 16-17.
