Boise State will play for all three championships on Sunday as Kryvchun and Arca Costas go for singles titles, while Bayldon and Arca Costas play for doubles title.
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Boise State men's tennis opens the spring with a strong performance at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic as Broncos go for a sweep of all three titles on Sunday. Kyryll Kryvchun and Simon Arca Costas will compete for the main draw and consolation singles titles, while Blake Balydon and Arca Costas go for the doubles championship tomorrow in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
"I could not be more proud of the way that the Broncos competed against some of the country's top competition," said Boise State assistant coach Ali Borhani. "We got wins against two different Pac-12 teams, which will build a lot of confidence for our guys going into next week's match against Baylor."
The tournament wraps up Sunday morning when Kryvchun faces Arizona State's Christian Lerby for the singles main draw championship, while Arca Costas competes for the consolation title against UCLA's Blaine Hovenier. In addition, Arca Costas and Bayldon will go for the top in doubles when they take on San Francisco's (USF) Phuc Huynh and Paul Giraud.
Kryvchun — the No. 5 seed — has been impressive at the NCTC through two days racing to the title match with three-consecutive sweeps. He opened Friday with a 6-0, 6-1 beat down of USF's Johan Garpered, then followed with a nearly as dominating 6-2, 6-0 quarterfinal victory over Ori Maior of USF and a 6-4, 6-2 win against No. 2 seed Roscoe Bellamy from UCLA in the semifinals. The three victories move him to 14-3 overall on the year.
Arca Costas opened the tournament by dropping his first match 6-4, 6-2 to UCLA's Connor Hance. He then proceeded to win a pair of matches in the back draw on Saturday to advance to Sunday's consolation final. The sophomore defeated Arizona State's George Stoupe in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-2, followed by a 6-2, 7-6(4) win over Fresno State's Cagatay Soke. Arca Costas is now 7-5 in singles this year.
Blake Bayldon split in the main draw on Friday opening with a round of 32 win over USF's Huynh 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8), before falling to UCLA's Bellamy in the next round. He finished his singles competition at the NCTC 1-1 to move to 8-5 overall on the year.Â
The fourth Bronco competing at the NCTC this weekend was Wyatt DeMulling who was forced to withdraw Saturday because of illness. DeMulling — the No. 7 seed —  won his opening match in straight sets Friday afternoon during the round of 16 beating Fresno State's Henrique Osorio in commanding fashion 6-0, 6-2. DeMulling is now 8-3 in singles.Â
The Broncos had two doubles teams competing at the tournament in a single elimination format. Arca Costas and Bayldon enter the spring ranked 50th nationally and were the No. 1 seed at the NCTC this weekend. They have not disappointed collecting a pair of wins to advance to Sunday's final. The Boise State duo opened with an 8-5 victory over USF's Mitchell Johnson and Johan Garpered on Friday. On Saturday, the tandem dispatched UCLA's duo of Blaine Hovenier and Connor Hance 8-4 in the semifinals. Arca Costas and Bayldon are now 6-0 as a doubles team.
The second doubles team for the Broncos was DeMulling and Kryvchun who were the No. 4 seed at the NCTC. They opened Friday with a 8-3 loss to USF's Huynh and Giraud, the team that will face Arca Costas and Bayldon for the title on Sunday.Â
