
Three Top-Eight Finishes Highlight Second Day of MW Championships

MINNEAPOLIS - Boise State advanced seven to the night finals on the second day of the Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships at Minneapolis. Overall, three placed in the top-eight in their respective races.
Lucia Davis had the top finish of the night taking third in the 500-yard freestyle, while Katie McCoy set a new career best in taking fifth-place in the 200-yard individual medley. Joining Davis with a top-eight finish in the 500 free was Hayley Hill who came in seventh.
Thursday afternoon, Tatum Thompkins scored her second-best score all-time on the 3-meter springboard during the preliminary round with a 294.74. The junior finished the day taking 13th out of 30 divers with a 285.25 during the B final.
"I'm happy that the girls have worked really hard to improve and it showed today with a few career and season highs," said head coach Christine Mabile. "Improve each day and give everything they have, that's what we asked them to do every day. We train them hard to make them better and a lot of them got better today, so overall I'm happy. But we need to pick it up and we need to be better going into the last two days, we need everybody to step up."
The first final of the evening was the 500 freestyle where Boise State advanced three out of the morning prelims into the finals. Lucia Davis recorded a 4:49.04 in the A final to place third overall, while Hayley Hill turned in a 4:51.32 to take seventh, both were season-best times.
Emma Brady reached the B final of the 500 free after placing ninth in the prelims with a 4:54.80. Brady swam a 4:54.29 in the B final to place third in the heat and 11th overall.
Katie McCoy broke her career best time in the 200-yard individual medley twice on Thursday, first in the prelims with a 2:00.11, then again in the A final with a 1:59.96 to take fifth overall.
The Broncos had two freestyle sprinters reach the finals of the 50 freestyle Thursday night with Emmie Jennings clocking a 23.22 and Robin Pinger a 23.37 — both times were season best — as they placed third and fourth respectively in the C final.
Thursday concluded with the lone relay race of the day, the 400-yard medley. Boise State's team featuring Molly Hogg, Pinger, Beatriz Zoppei and Jennings clocked a season-best 3:42.05.
The MW Championships will continue on Friday with the preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. (Mountain) and the final beginning at 5:30 p.m. (MT).
