Broncos Drop Bay Area Finale

2/23/2020 1:34:00 PM | Softball

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Boise State brought the go-ahead run to the plate with the bases loaded in the seventh, but Jessica McKay's line drive was right at Cal Poly shortstop Xiara Diaz, and the Broncos ended their weekend at the Silicon Valley Classic with a 4-1 loss to the Mustangs.

The Broncos (9-6), who finished 3-2 at the event, threatened a comeback in each of the final two innings after a three-run Mustang fifth put them in a 4-1 hole, but Cal Poly starter Krystyna Allman worked herself out of the jam each time.

Boise State had runners at second and third, and the tying run at the plate in the top of the sixth, but Allman got pinch-hitter Bella Rocco to ground to short to end that rally. In the seventh, Serena Huchingson opened with a base hit, followed two batters later by another single from India Kelly to put two on with one out. With two outs, Bradie Fillmore's infield single loaded the bases, but Allman was able to get McKay to line to short.

Cal Poly (9-5) snapped a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth, starting the scoring with Sydney Frankenberger's one-out, RBI triple which plated Sarah Wulff. After Noellah Ramos drew a walk off of Kelsey Broadus, Shelby Jeffries singled down the line in right to bring in Frankenberger. Consecutive hit batsmen from Broadus then forced in the Mustangs' fourth run.

Broadus suffered her first loss of the campaign, falling to 6-1. The senior went four and a third, striking out three but giving up four earned runs on five hits. Micaela Leal did well in relief, to keep the Broncos within striking range, coming in after Lily Amos was beaned to force in the fourth run and striking out the next two batters to leave the bases loaded. Leal would give up just one hit over the final inning and two-thirds.

"Today was a disappointing effort from the office. Kelsey and Mickey threw well enough for us to win, but we didn't come up with the timely hits when we needed them," said Boise State head coach Maggie Huffaker. "Hopefully we can learn from a tough day."

Fillmore went 3-for-4 to lead the Bronco offense, and drove in the only Boise State run of the game with an RBI single that plated India Kelly in the first. Karlee Johnson, 2-for-3 with a double Sunday, was the only other Bronco with a multi-hit day.

Boise State returns to California next weekend for the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton. The Broncos begin the five-game slate Friday against BYU (1 p.m. MT) and host Cal State Fullerton (7 p.m. MT).
