Boise State rallied from 2-1 down to force the match to a fifth set where the Broncos came up short 15-11.
BOISE, Idaho - Makayla Hansen and Danielle Boss recorded double-doubles to lead Boise State against Utah State Tuesday night, but it was not enough as the Aggies edged the Broncos 3-2 in a Mountain West Conference volleyball match. Trailing 2-1 in the match, Boise State rallied to win the fourth and force the contest to a fifth set before falling to USU 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11.Â
The loss moves the Blue and Orange to 15-6 overall and 4-5 in conference play, while the Aggies remain in second-place at 15-6 and 7-2 in league.Â
"It's a tough loss, but credit Utah State. I thought they played with great intensity, even after a slow start for them," said head coach Shawn Garus. "I thought they stayed the course and were the more consistent team throughout the match."
Garus was happy with how the team battled back in the fourth set, "I'm glad that we were able to push it to five, but nothing was comfortable tonight. It just looked like a grind, I don't think we passed the ball particularly well, and we just weren't as aggressive as our opponents were tonight."
The Broncos led nearly the entire way in the opening set and won it by two points after the Aggies rallied late to make it close.Â
The Aggies and Broncos battled through the two tightly contested periods in the second and third before Utah State claimed both with late runs to secure both set victories and take a 2-1 advantage in the match. The second set saw 11 ties and five lead changes, while the third saw four ties and two lead changes as the Aggies held on to seize the momentum heading into the fourth frame.Â
After dropping the opening point of the fourth set, Boise State regrouped and took the lead for good. Lauren Ohlinger led the Broncos in the set by hitting .500 percent with five kills, one service ace and two block assists. The Broncos led by as many as eight points and hit .273 in the period as they claimed the victory to tie the match up at 2-2.Â
Both teams hit well in the fifth set as the Broncos out hit the Aggies .583 percent to .500 percent. However, Utah State took advantage of its opportunities early to take a five-point lead. Boise State attempted to rally but the deficit was too much for the Broncos to overcome as they fell 15-11 in the decisive set. Â
Boise State finished the contest hitting .224 percent as a team for 55 kills to go with 50 assists, 10 service aces, 54 digs and 15 blocks. Utah State countered by hitting .247 percent for 69 kills on 63 assists with nine service aces, 58 digs and 12 blocks.Â
Hansen finished the match with her fourth double-double of the season on 12 kills and 13 digs, both second-best on the team. She also tallied two service aces and five block assists to end the contest with 16.5 points.Â
Boss earned her ninth double-double of the year and 33rd in her career on a team highs for assists and digs with 46 and 19, respectively. She also had a team-high three service aces, one block solo and one block assist.Â
Ohlinger recorded a team-high 16 kills with one service ace, six digs, a career-high three block solos, three block assists. Â She finished with the team highs for both total blocks with six and points with 21.5.
Kayly Pau added nine kills and two block solos, followed by Jessica Donahue with eight kills and four blocks assists, and Alyssa Wissinger with six kills and four block assists.Â
Boise State will be back in action later this week when the Broncos head to California to face Fresno State on Thursday, then Sacramento State on Saturday in Sacramento.
