Broncos down Nevada in four

Boise State’s win improved the Broncos to 13-3 overall and 2-2 in Mountain West play.

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State used a balanced offensive attack on Saturday to defeat the Nevada Wolf Pack in four sets 3-1. Boise State hit the ball well finishing at .341 percent while holding Nevada to .178 percent. In addition, the Broncos were led by Lauren Ohlinger with a team-high 14 kills followed by Paige Bartsch with 12 and Kayly Pau with 11. 

The Blue and Orange improved to 13-3 overall and 2-2 in Mountain West Conference play with the victory over Nevada. Boise State hits the road next week as the Broncos travel to play at Air Force and New Mexico.

Boise State rolled to an easy 13-point (25-12) set one victory to open the match and hit a match-high .429 percent with 14 kills and only two errors on 28 attacks in the period. They hit nearly as well in the second set at .393, but somehow the Wolf Pack rallied —  hitting .375 percent — to edge the Broncos in extra points 26-24. 

The Blue and Orange responded with a solid third set where it hit .310 percent and never trailed as the Broncos regained the match lead at 2-1. 

The decisive fourth set was tight until the midway point with the teams trading eight leads early. With Boise State trailing 13-11, the Broncos regrouped and rolled off a 5-0 run led by Ohlinger with two kills during that stretch. Boise State never trailed again as it extended the lead to as many as five before securing the match victory 25-12, 24-26, 25-17, 25-20.

The Broncos' Blue Wall entered the week ranked first in the Mountain West and 10th nationally for total blocks. Well, the Wall proved to be big again on Saturday recording 16 team blocks. They had a season-high 18 on Thursday to give them a very impressive 34 on the weekend. 

Ohlinger added one service ace, six digs and two block assists to her 14 kills to finish the contest with a team-best (tied) 16 points. 

Freshman Paige Bartsch — who has a cannon for an arm — followed with 12 powerful kills while hitting a team and career-best .647 percent. She also recorded two block solos and four block assists to finish tied for the lead in points with 16. 

Pau was close behind Bartsch with 11 kills to go with two digs and two block assists to end the contest with 12 points.

Makayla Hansen hit .412 percent for nine kills and tallied one service ace, team-high 15 digs, one solo block, six block assists and 14 points. 

In her first start of the season, Annie Kaminski was solid as well, finishing with a season-high seven kills while hitting .438 percent. Kaminski also tied her career-high for blocks with eight to finish with 11 points.

Leading the offense was senior setter Danielle Boss who recorded her seventh double-double of the season on a team-high 46 assists and 11 digs. Boss also had four kills and three blocks.
