ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Boise State came up short in its bid against defending Mountain West champion New Mexico as it fell 1-0 in Sunday's match on the road.
The lone goal of the match came in the 63rd minute after the Broncos were unable to clear a free kick that landed in the penalty box. The Lobos' Jadyn Edwards reeled the ball in and put it past the goalkeeper Genevieve Crenshaw, securing the lead for the home side.
Boise State's defense turned in a heroic effort in the first half to keep New Mexico off of the scoreboard as Crenshaw tallied six saves on 10 Lobo shots in the period. The Broncos came inches from claiming the opening goal in the 32nd minute when Kenzie MacMillan put a ball on frame from just in front of the net, but an acrobatic save from New Mexico's keeper prevented the chance from scoring.
The second half saw a much better performance from the Broncos who turned in 10 shots including two on frame. Aubree Chatterton put a shot through to the back of the net, but a foul called against Boise State in the box disallowed the goal. Not too long after, another Chatterton shot came close to scoring, but an unlucky bounce off the post sent the ball across the front of the net to an awaiting New Mexico defender.
Up next Boise State returns home to Boas Soccer Complex for matches against San Jose State (Oct. 8) and Fresno State (Oct. 10).
