SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Boise State men's tennis recorded a huge 4-0 road victory at San Diego State Saturday afternoon in the Mountain West Conference opener. Boise State won a tightly contested doubles point 2-1, then followed with three straight singles victories from Michael Bott, Luka Soskic and Simon Arca Costas. The Broncos' first victory at SDSU since 2011 extended their win streak to eight as they improved to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in league.
"I was really proud of the way the team competed today. We came out and won a super tight doubles point against a team that historically is very good in doubles," said head coach Kristian Widen. "I think winning the way we did and with us playing outside for the second time this season was big. We came out with good energy and played our style, San Diego State is a good program and hard to beat at home. I thought that Michael (Bott) was a rock in singles and doubles for us, he was probably our MVP in this match."
Boise State rallied from one down in doubles to take the team point 2-1 from the Aztecs. After Arca Costas and Balke Bayldon lost their first match of the year 6-4 on court one, the Broncos came back.
Caden Moortgat and Michael Bott tied it up when they won their No. 2 doubles match in a tiebreaker 7-6(4). Lukas Ridemar and Luka Soskic clinched the team point when they won 7-5 on court three.
Up one, Boise State headed into singles needing three wins to take the match. They wasted little time winning the first three matches completed in straight sets.
Bott started the ball rolling when he dispatched Judson Blair 6-4, 6-1. Soskic moved the Blue and Orange within one of victory after he beat Victor Castro 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
The match clincher came from the reigning Mountain West Player of the Week Arca Costas. The redshirt-sophomore capped the Boise State victory with a 6-3, 6-3 two-set victory over Rafael Gonzalez.
The Broncos will return home for a two-match homestand next weekend when they host Weber State and Montana State.
