RENO, Nev. – Boise State soccer secured its first win of the season in a high-scoring affair with the Nevada Wolf Pack at Mackay Stadium, Saturday. In the end, the Broncos were victorious 3-2.
"Three points is three points. We were really happy to come away with our first win, but are under no disillusionment that we need to continue to improve," said head coach Jim Thomas.
The Broncos (1-1-1, 1-1-1 MW) came out attacking early. Boise State logged 10 first-half shots to Nevada's three and eventually finished with a 20-7 advantage.
Junior transfer Dorian Goodwin got the Broncos on the board early knocking home a cross by senior Aubree Chatterton in the 25th minute.
Nevada (0-3-0, 0-3-0 MW) came back to tie the match right out of halftime off of a penalty kick in the 46th minute.
Chatterton recorded her first goal of the season off a feed from Abby Bivens in the 73rd minute to put the Broncos back in the lead. Chatterton finished the day with a goal and assist.
The Wolf Pack responded with a goal in the 79th minute to square the game at two.
Just under two minutes later sophomore Morgan Stone responded with a goal of her own in the 81st minute off an assist by freshman Mia Burns. It would turn out to be the game-winner. It's Stone's first goal of the season and first game-winner of her career.
Junior goalkeeper Sydney Smith recorded two saves to secure her first win of the season and her 19th of her career.
"A lot of things were significantly better following the first weekend of play. Our focus has to remain on that improvement and ironing out the kinks that are making these games far more arduous than they need be, said Thomas."
The Broncos now return home to Boise for the first time this season. They prepare to face Fresno State on Friday, followed by a Sunday matchup with San Jose State.
