BRONCOS HOST AZTECS IN MOUNTAIN WEST PLAY

WHAT'S NEXT: Boise State (10-2) returns home for one match this week when the San Diego State Aztecs (4-8) come to town for a 12 p.m. first serve on Saturday in Bronco Gym.

SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE: The Aztecs are 4-8 overall and are coming off a split at home last week versus Utah State (L 0-3, W 3-2). They return four starters and 13 letterwinners from 2019 when SDSU went 15-14 overall and 8-10 in league, they also added four newcomers.  

They are led by Victoria O'Sullivan who is averaging 3.17 kills per set, ninth in the MW. As a team, San Diego State is averaging 11.86 kills (MW 8th) per set, 11.24 assists (MW 7th), 13.62 digs and 1.74 blocks.

SCOUTING BOISE STATE: Boise State enters the week at 10-2 overall, 6-0 at home and 4-2 on the road. The Broncos swept Nevada 3-0 twice last week in Reno. Boise State went 18-12 overall in 2019 and 10-8 in conference to place fourth, it also advanced to the NIVC. The Blue and Orange return five starters and the libero, as well as 11 members of the 2019 squad. In addition to the 11 returners, Boise State added four recruits to this year's team.

Boise State is led by Preseason All-MW honoree Lauren Ohlinger who is averaging 4.21 kills per set (MW 1st / NCAA 46th), 11.45 attacks (MW 1st / NCAA 43rd) and 4.67 points (MW 2nd).  As a team, Boise State leads the MW and is ranked fifth nationally for blocks per set (3.06), the Broncos are ranked second in MW for hitting percentage (.252), opponents' hitting percentage (.159), kills per set (13.43), assists per set (12.26) and digs per set (15.17).

MW PRESEASON POLL: The Mountain West Preseason Coaches Poll projected Boise State to place fourth and San Diego State fifth.

THE BOISE STATE Vs. SAN DIEGO STATE SERIES: This rivalry enters its 19th meeting all-time with Boise State leading 10-8 to date. The Broncos lead the series in matches played at Boise by a 6-3 margin; Boise State swept SDSU 2-0 last year.  

SHAWN GARUS RECORDS 200TH WIN: Boise State head coach Shawn Garus recorded his 200th win at Boise State when the Broncos swept Utah State (Feb. 12-13) to reach the milestone with the second victory. Garus, who is in his 12th season with the program, currently stands at 206-146, his career record stands at 314-265 in 20 years. Garus ranks second in total wins in program history, out of 10 coaches all-time. At Boise State, he has recorded nine winning seasons overall, including an active streak of six straight. He has three seasons (2010, 2015, 2016) with 20-plus wins.

WEEK SIX RECAP: Boise State swept a pair of 3-0 matches last weekend at Nevada to improve to 10-2 overall. The Broncos dominated both contests over a short handed Wolf Pack squad. Boise State held Nevada to 6.7 percent hitting in match one, then a minus 6.3 in the second contest.

On the weekend, Boise State hit .285 percent with 85 kills, 14 service aces and 20 blocks, while Nevada countered at .015 percent hitting with 46 kills, 11 service aces and 11 blocks.

WEEK SIX LEADERS: Lauren Ohlinger led Boise State with 29 kills while hitting .318 percent, Jessica Donahue hit .654 percent for 19 kills to go with a team-high 13 blocks, 10 came in the second meeting. Kayly Pau reach double-digit kills with 14 to go with six blocks, followed by Alyssa Wissinger with 11 kills and six blocks.

BRONCO SEASON LEADERS: Lauren Ohlinger — a six-rotation player — leads the team overall with 177 kills (4.21 kps), 99 digs (2.36 dps) and 20 blocks (0.48 bps). Freshman Kayly Pau is second in kills with 108 (2.57 kps) to go with 28 blocks (0.67). Jessica Donahue is hitting .395 — second in MW — for 87 kills (2.42 kps) with 63 blocks, she leads the MW and ranks second nationally for blocks per set at 1.75 bps.

BOSS RANKED FIFTH FOR ASSISTS: Danielle Boss entered the season ranked eighth during the rally scoring era (2001 to present) at Boise State for career assists with 1,767, she had 1,113 as a sophomore in 2019. She has now moved into fifth with 2,034 overall.

BOSS DISTRIBUTING THE BALL: Danielle Boss enters the week ranked second in the Mountain West for assists per set 9.85, her total of 404 which leads the MW.

DONAHUE RANKED SECOND NATIONALLY: Jessica Donahue is currently ranked second nationally and first in the MW for blocks per set at 1.75, her current total is a MW-high 63 (MW 1st / NCAA 44).

DONAHUE ANCHORS THE BLUE WALL: Jessica Donahue started the season ranked fourth during the rally scoring era (2001 to present) at Boise State for career blocks with 298. She now sits at 361 overall heading into the UNM series, eight short of third. The junior tallied 163 in 2019, third most all-time and six short of tying the school record for a season. The 163 blocks also led the MW and was ranked 11th nationally.

KAMINSKI LEADS THE MW IN HITTING: Redshirt-freshman Annie Kaminski has moved into the Mountain West Conference lead for hitting percentage at .500, she just met the minimum for attempts per set to qualify.
