Vanessa Timm earned her 50th career singles victory as the Broncos overcame an early deficit to beat New Mexico 4-2 Sunday afternoon.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Vanessa Timm earned career singles victory number 50 as the Boise State women's tennis team defeated New Mexico 4-2 in comeback fashion to improve to 2-0 in Mountain West play Sunday afternoon in Albuquerque.
"Today's match was such an incredibly gritty effort from our team," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "To beat such a good New Mexico team on the road after dropping the doubles point was a tall order, but our team never stopped fighting for it and showed so much heart and resolve in a difficult road environment. You could see how much they wanted it and they put their hearts on their sleeves to dig deep and find a way to win."
The Lobos were able to gain a slight edge over the Broncos early on, winning the doubles point after taking courts two and three. Shauna Heffernan and Joana Baptista were victorious on court one, defeating Natasha Munday and Hsuan Huang 6-2. On court two, Pauline Ernstberger and Holly Stewart suffered their first doubles loss of the season. Meanwhile, despite a strong effort from Nicole Discenza and Ana Conde Vendrell the Lobos took court three 7-5 to capture the doubles team point heading into singles.
Singles play, however, would be a different story for the Blue and Orange. Baptista was able to quickly level the match at one apiece, defeating Yue Lin Chen 6-2, 6-1 on court one. Conde Vendrell only needed two sets to take down the Lobos' Allison Romero 6-2, 6-4 and hand Boise State its first lead of the match 2-1.
Redshirt-junior Vanessa Timm kept pressing on for the Blue and Orange, defeating My Kagayama 6-4, 7-5 to put her team up 3-1 to give the Broncos a chance to clinch the match. Timm's victory was the 50th of her career in singles, making her the 31st Bronco to eclipse that mark.
"Vanessa has been such a vital part of our program and leads in such great ways on and off the court," said Roghaar. "To see her reach this milestone today is just really special. She's grown as much as anyone during her time here and she's not done yet."
Though facing a serious deficit late in the match, New Mexico fought back by taking a win on court five to bring them within one of Boise State. It was Ernstberger, a freshman, who sealed the deal for the Blue and Orange, defeating Natasha Munday 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 at the No. 2 position to end the match.
The Broncos now improve to 8-2 after picking up the two wins this weekend. Boise State will now return home to face UNLV (April 2nd) and San Diego State (April 3rd) next weekend in the team's final home matches of the season.
