Broncos Sweep Doubleheader at San Jose State

Solid pitching and hitting leads Broncos to the sweep over the Spartans.
"It was fantastic to see the bats come alive collectively today," said head coach Maggie Huffaker. "We did a great job executing and stringing hits together and again had quality starts from Kiele Miller and Sara Johnson!"
The Broncos' starting pitchers recorded complete games and allowed a combined three hits and one run while tallying a team ERA of 0.64 in 11 innings of action. Offensively, Boise State's batters were hot, collecting 26 hits on the day, including a season-high 14 in game one as the Broncos finished with a team batting average of .456 versus the San Jose State pitching staff.
Three Broncos recorded four hits on the day led by Alison Seng with a batting average of .800 on 4-of-5 hitting, followed by Jordyn Hutchins who went 4-for-6 (.667) and Kelsey Lalor who finished at 4-for-7 (.571). The trio combined for 12 hits, 10 runs and 10 RBI.Â
Boise State and San Jose State will wrap up the three-games series Sunday at 1 p.m. (Mountain).

Boise State's starting pitcher Kiele Miller went the entire way holding the Spartan batters at bay while her teammates exploded for a season-high 14 hits and 11 runs. Miller surrendered two hits and one run with four strikeouts and three walks on the way to her third win of the season. Boise State would explode for four runs in the third and three in both the fourth and fifth innings to put the Spartans away.
The Broncos opened the scoring in the first inning as the first two batters up hit singles to start the ball rolling. With Lalor on third, Hutchins sent a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Lalor across the plate for the first run of the game.Â
In the third inning, the Blue and Orange batted around as Boise State brought home four base runners to put the game out of reach of San Jose State. With two out and no one on base, the Broncos went to work. Bella Rocco singled to shortstop, followed by Hutchins doubling to center field which brought Rocco home. Next, Seng singled to left to score Hutchins. Bennett was the sixth batter at the plate in the inning, she proceeded to single to right center advancing Seng to third. Boise State then successfully converted on a double steal, scoring Seng from third while Bennett reached second. Karlee Johnson was then hit by a pitch. India Kelly, pinch hitting, followed with a single up the middle to score Bennett from second to make it 5-0 Broncos heading to the bottom half of the inning.
After SJSU scored one run in the bottom of the third to make it 5-1 Boise State, the Broncos responded with three more runs in the top of the fourth. With Lalor on third and Ashlyn Adams on second, Hutchins came up to bat. She reached on a fielding error which brought home Lalor and advanced Adams to third. Seng then sacrificed bunted to third bringing home Adams for the second run of the inning. The final score of the frame came when Bennett singled to left bringing Hutchins across the plate from second. Â
Up 8-1, the Broncos added some insurance runs when they scored three more times. The Broncos batted around for the second time in the game as Boise State used five pinch hitters. India Kelly opened the inning with a pinch hit bunt, she would later steal second to get into scoring position. Isabelle Butler walked, followed by Lalor doubling to left center to score Kelly. With two out, the Broncos had Butler on third and Lalor on second when Hutchins hit a single to right field bringing both Lalor and Butler across the plate for the final runs of the game and Boise State leading 11-1.Â
San Jose State failed to score in the bottom half of the fifth to end the game by the eight run rule.Â

Boise State started game two like it did game one, striking early for a pair of runs, then stretching its lead throughout the final five innings of the game. Sara Johnson pitched for the Broncos striking out nine Spartans while walking one giving up one hit. She retired the Spartans in order in four of the six innings as she collected her second victory of the season.Â
The Bronco batters backed up Johnson's pitching performance with solid hitting recording 12 hits in the game. Seng led the way with three hits followed by Lalor, Rocco and Hutchins with two each.Â
Boise State opened the game with two scores in the top of the first. For the second time today, Lalor opened with a lead off single up the middle. With one out, Rocco doubled to left scoring Lalor from first. Hutchins was the next batter up, sending a single to right that brought Rocco home for the 2-0 Bronco lead after one.Â
With one out in the top of the third, Rocco singled up the middle. Hutchins was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Seng then singled through the right side to load the bases. Bennett then cleared the bases with a three RBI double to center field that hit the wall.Â
It remained a 5-0 Bronco advantage until the top of the sixth when Boise State would strike for three runs. With one out, Hailey Hayes singled to left center. Lalor then tripled down the right field line to score Grace Kimball who was pinch running for Hayes. Butler then walked to put runners on the corners. With two out, Hutchins singled to the pitcher which brought Lalor home from third. Then with Butler on third, Hutchins stole second, when the throw by SJSU's catcher went past the shortstop on the put out attempt, Butler came home on the throwing error. That proved to be the final score of the game as San Jose State failed to score in the bottom of the sixth.Â
