Broncos Fall Twice to Nationally Ranked Arizona State and Arizona

BOISE, Idaho - The Bronco beach volleyball team fell twice on Friday to No. 20 Arizona State 5-0 and ninth-ranked Arizona 4-1 on the opening day of the Boise State Beach Classic. Boise State was led by its No. 1 pair of Erin Martin and Evi Wilson who defeated Arizona's top team in three sets. That proved to be the lone break through for the Blue and Orange on Friday as the Broncos moved to 5-10 overall.Â
"I think today we had some ups and downs throughout the whole day, especially against Arizona State where we lost 5-0 to a great team," said head coach Allison Voigt. "I think we had opportunities missed, but I think against Arizona we came back with good motivation and energy. We had some great moments and we beat their number one team, which is fantastic. There were other great battles as well with Rory (Chartier) and Kaylee (Mejia) playing so tough, it was great just seeing how much they improved throughout the day."
"I thought we all felt the energy today in the first match. We had a bunch of good fans out here supporting us along the way, but unfortunately we lost both matches to Arizona and Arizona State," said Erin Martin. "They're both good teams and I think we were expecting a little bit more from ourselves, but I think we're ready to go and I know we're hungry for tomorrow's games against ASU and Utah. I thought we all battled really tough, and we were right there in quite a few matches. I'm excited that Evi (Wilson) and I ended up pulling out the win which was great."
The Boise State Beach Classic continues Saturday at 12 p.m. when the Broncos and Sun Devils face off one more time, followed by the regular season finale against the Utah Utes.Â

The Broncos opened the Boise State Beach Classic versus 20th-ranked Arizona State falling 5-0 in a contest that saw three matches go to three sets. Leading the way for the Broncos were the No. 1, 4 and 5 pairs that went three sets before falling to their Sun Devil opponents. Â Â
Erin Martin and Evi Wilson rallied from one set down to take ASU's No. 1 duo of Lexi Sweeney and Katelyn Carballo to three sets before getting edged out 20-22, 21-12, 15-13.
Katie Martin and Sierra Land also battled through three sets, winning the opening set before falling to Arizona State's Lila Bordis and Samantha Plaster 21-18, 17-21, 15-11 on court four.Â
Kylee Johnson and Ellie McDonald won their first set, then watched as the ASU tandem of  Taryn Ames and Lauren Weintraub forced their contest to a third game. Unfortunately, the Boise State duo came up short in the end 17-21, 21-18, 15-11.

For the second time Friday the Broncos faced a top-20 ranked team in ninth-ranked Arizona falling to the Wildcats 4-1. Boise State's No. 1 pair of Erin Martin and Evi Wilson led the Broncos by defeating Arizona's top duo of Alex Parkhurst and Alana Rennie in three sets 21-15, 7-21, 17-15.Â
That proved to be the lone victory of the day for the Broncos who took two of the five matches to three sets. Kaylee Mejia and Rorianna Chartier rallied from a set down to win the second and force the contest to a final third game. In the end, the Boise State freshmen tandem fell to Natalie Anselmo and Carly Lowry 21-16, 18-21, 15-12.Â
