Wyatt DeMulling clinched the match as Boise State rallied from 1-0 down to win the regular season finale in Boise.
BOISE, Idaho - Wyatt DeMulling's win at No. 6 singles completed the Boise State rally from a point down to win his Senior Day match as the Broncos beat Utah State 4-1 Saturday after in Boise. The Aggies won a hard fought doubles point 2-1, only to watch as Boise State took control in singles winning fourth straight matches. Blake Bayldon won the first singles match and DeMulling won the last as the two seniors played a major role in the victory in potentially their final contest in the blue and orange.
DeMulling was excited about clinching the win on senior day, "The team win on senior day, that's pretty special and it was a nice way to go out for sure. For me losing that first set was tough, but of course, like usual, what other way would there be for me to go out than playing a third set."
The win improved the Broncos to 17-3 overall and 5-2 in Mountain West Conference play. Now they will wait and see whether their season will continue on in the NCAA tournament with the selection show scheduled for May 3. Meanwhile, the Aggies fell to 12-8 and 3-4 in league.
After a slow start by the Broncos, doubles turned out to be a battle before the Aggies claimed the team point 2-1. Boise State struck first picking up the first win on court one where Bayldon and Simon Arca Costas defeated USU's top tandem of Felipe Acosta and Javier Ruiz 6-4.
Unfortunately for Caden Moortgat and Lawarence Sciglitano on court three and Kyryll Kryvchun and Michael Bott on court two, both Boise State tandems found themselves in big holes early trailing 4-0 and 3-0, respectively. However, both teams rallied to tie their doubles matches up at 5-5 before their Aggie opponents regrouped to win both contests 7-5.
Down one heading into the singles portion of the match, Boise State stormed into control of the match with four straight singles victories. The first off the court was Bayldon who put away Sergiu Bucur in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. For Bayldon it was the 11th singles win of the season.
"I felt good from the start in doubles, Simon and I came out firing and got out to a good start and finished doubles strong," said Bayldon. "Even though we (the team) lost the doubles point, I think all the guys came out pretty strong in singles. I felt pretty comfortable out there today. I was serving really well in closing out the first set, then I just kept cruising through the second. Overall, a win is a good way to go out and I'm pretty pumped for the team."
The second Bronco to record a victory was Luka Soskic winning his No. 5 singles match in two sets 6-2, 6-3 over Javier Ruiz. He was followed by Michael Bott who won a first-set tiebreaker on his way to beating Roko Savin 7-6(2), 6-4 to put Boise State within one of clinching the match.
DeMulling would clinch the team victory after rallying from a set down to Arvid Hjalte. The senior from Seattle ended up winning his 64th career singles match in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to hand the Broncos a 4-1 team win.
"I'm happy for the whole team. I thought we played great, we started out a little bit slow in dubs but then we came back fighting. Even though we lost the doubles point, everybody played really well on singles and fought hard. I'm proud of everybody and I think this is a huge win for us, we haven't beaten Utah State and forever."
