BOISE, Idaho – In true storybook fashion Vanessa Timm was the hero of her own senior day as the Boise State women's tennis team bounced back from yesterday's loss to UNLV to beat San Diego State 4-1 Saturday morning at Appleton Tennis Center.
"That was a gritty match yesterday and we put everything out there to try to dig our way out and almost got it done," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "To be able to hit the delete button and come back today and compete as well as we did, I think says a lot about this team."
Doubles was a back-and-forth affair as the Broncos took the win on court two 6-2, while San Diego State stole a win in similar fashion 6-2 on court three to even the doubles point at one apiece. On court one Joana Baptista and Shauna Heffernan won their tiebreaker 7-6(3) and the Broncos moved on into singles play with a 1-0 lead.
Boise State kept pressing forward in singles, beginning with Holly Stewart who took down the Aztecs' Nnena Nadozie 6-2, 6-2 to extend the Bronco lead. Nicole Discenza followed right behind, winning her court six match 6-2, 6-2 over Agustina Rimoldi to put Boise State in a position to clinch the match.
San Diego State was able to delay the loss with a two-set win on court one, when all eyes turned to court four with the Broncos holding onto a 3-1 lead.
Timm found herself in a three-set battle against the Aztecs' Cecile Morin. After dropping the first set 6-2, she bounced back to win the next set 6-2 to send the match to a third. In set three, she dominated from start to finish, winning it 6-1, clinching the match and embracing her teammates as they rushed the court to congratulate her.
"It was just absolutely amazing like honestly, I didn't even know that I was in the position to clinch," said Timm. "I was in a good spot so it was absolutely amazing, just seeing my teammates all coming to me afterwards. It was so amazing and emotional it was just a really good day."
"To see her in that position on senior day, I mean you can't write it any better than that," said Roghaar. "I think that match kind of sums up exactly what she brings to our team. She dropped the first set but Vanessa didn't go away. She looked for a solution, she found a solution, she committed to the solution, and then she got the result. From her freshman year to now that's been her process, learning and growing and finding a way, then making it happen."
Before the match, Timm was recognized in front of the fans at Appleton Tennis Center for her accomplishments both in athletics and academics.
"Our culture wouldn't be where it is right now without her here over the last four years," said Roghaar. "She's going to look back at her time here and know that she's played a vital role in our foundation and where we're going to be in a few years down the line. She's just got to be so proud of the legacy that she's left in our program.
The Broncos (9-3, 3-1 MW) now shift their attention to a two-match weekend in Logan, Utah, where they will face Utah State on April 9 and San Jose State on April 10. Though she is enjoying the moment now, Timm knows there is still more tennis to be played for the Broncos: "We still have more to go."
