Cavinta and Johnson Earn Gold on Final Day

CLOVIS, Calif. – On the final day of the Mountain West Championships, Boise State track and field garnered a pair of gold medals in the women's 1,500-meter and the men's 400m hurdles.

Olivia Johnson, running in the 1,500m set a MW Championships record time of 4:19.86 to secure the overall victory. The mark also improved her personal best by nearly three seconds. For Johnson, it's her first-career MW title.

Ryan Cavinta cruised to the win and a personal best of 52.07 in the 400m hurdles. Cavinta is a first-time Mountain West Champion. Right behind him was fellow Bronco Jose Rubio, setting a PR of his own with a time of 52.33 and grabbing a silver medal for the effort.

In the morning field events, the Boise throwers made a mark on the leaderboard; Connor Bjornson PR'd twice to earn a sixth-place finish in a strong Mountain West field. Madelin Muilenburg added over three meters to her personal best in the women's javelin and was rewarded with a bronze-medal finish.

Running in the 800m, Boise State swept the bronze medals for both the men and the women. Jacob Grinwis clocked a time of 1:51.81. For the women, Kristie Schoffield ran her fastest 800 time of the year at 2:06.11.

The Bronco men's 4x400m relay team of Rubio, Chip Mitchell, Brayden Durfee and Cavinta blasted a time of 3:13.30 to earn the silver medal. That mark is the fastest time by a Boise State relay team this season by just over three seconds.

Boise State closed the MW Championships with a total medal count of nine (two gold, two silver, five bronze).
