BOISE, Idaho – Maggie Huffaker announced Monday that she is stepping down from her position as Boise State softball head coach.
"Being the head coach at Boise State has been a complete honor and privilege," Huffaker said. "I am grateful most for the student-athletes, their hard work, dedication and passion. I will cherish the memories made on and off the field.
"I am grateful to the administrators, especially Matt Brewer and Christina Van Tol, for giving me the opportunity to lead the program. I also want to thank the support staff and my amazing assistant coaches for all they've done for the program and to help me along this journey.
"As I have come to this decision to choose a different path, I have to consider my family first, and I look forward to spending more time with my husband and daughter. They've been my biggest supporters, and we look forward to now being Bronco fans forever.
"The future is so bright for Boise State softball and I can't wait to see the success that's in store for the program."
Huffaker, who had spent the last three seasons as head coach, led the Broncos to the second NCAA Championship bid in school history in 2019. The appearance was the first as an at-large selection in school history, and Huffaker was just one of four first-year head coaches in the country to lead a team to the NCAA tournament. Boise State concluded the season with the highest winning percentage in the nation for any school with a first-year head coach.
"I would like to thank Coach Huffaker for mentoring an outstanding group of young women these past few seasons," the Broncos' Director of Athletics, Jeramiah Dickey, said. "Her student-athletes have excelled both on and off the field while dealing with incredibly difficult circumstances these past two years. She has been an amazing leader, and I wish her the best as she moves toward championing a different path with her family."
At the Gainesville Regional in 2019, Boise State earned its first NCAA tournament win with a 9-1 victory over Stanford, and reached the regional championship for the first time in school history.
Boise State also entered the polls for the first time in program history during the 2019 campaign, and ended the year ranked 35th in the RPI — the highest end-of-season ranking in school history. Huffaker's 2019 squad finished the season with a 36-16 overall record, the second-most wins in program history. Boise State also won 17-straight games that season, the longest winning streak to date.
Long regarded for her work with hitters, Boise State's offense enjoyed success in her debut season. The Broncos set program records for triples (17) and home runs (64), while also ranking in the top 20 nationally in batting average (12th; .320), scoring (10th; 6.38) and slugging percentage (10th; .525).
Bronco student-athletes combined for 13 All-Mountain West accolades during her three seasons, including infielder Bella Rocco, who was named the 2021 MW Co-Freshman of the Year.
A national search for the Broncos' next softball head coach will begin immediately.
