Pau and Ohlinger combined for 25 kills to lead Boise State rally over the Beach in five sets.

BOISE, Idaho - Kayly Pau and Lauren Ohlinger combined for 25 kills to lead Boise State from two sets down to defeat Long Beach State in their second match of the Boise State Invitational on Friday in Bronco Gym. After dropping the first two sets of the contest, the Broncos forced the match into a decisive fifth set where they outlasted the Beach in a classic battle in extra points to claim the victory 20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 20-18.

The win was the Blue and Orange's second all-time against Long Beach State (1-1) as it remained perfect on the season at 2-0.

Neither team hit the ball particularly well in the contest as the defenses dominated throughout the five sets. Boise State finished with a .167 hitting percentage compared to Long Beach State's .137 percent. The two squads combined for 24 blocks as the Broncos collected 13 to the Beach's 11.

The victory came down to the fifth set where Boise State opened on a 4-0 run and stretched its advantage out to 8-2 before the Beach rallied. Long Beach State slowly clawed its way back to tie the set up at 12 all and had a chance to win it with match point up 17-16.

But the Broncos rallied for the win behind a kill by Pau to tie it at 17 all, followed by two kills from Ohlinger that were sandwiched around two service errors — one per team. The first Ohlinger kill gave the Blue and Orange an 18-17 lead, the second was the match winner that she hit high off the block for the 20-18 victory.

Ohlinger finished the match with back-to-back double-doubles to open the season with 12 kills and team-high 15 digs to go with one service ace and one block assist to finish with a team second-best 13.5 points.

In her season debut, Pau recorded a team-high 13 kills to go with two block assists for a team-high 14 points.

Makayla Hansen added seven kills, one service ace and eight block assists for 12 points, in addition to eight digs.

Alyssa Wissinger tallied four kills and five block assists, while Alli O'Harra chipped in four kills and tied Hansen for the team-high in blocks with eight.

Chey Jones — playing her second career match at setter — distributed a team-best 28 assists to go with three kills, nine digs and one block.
