Ohlinger’s 15 kills leads Broncos as Boise State rolls past Hornets.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Lauren Ohlinger's 15 kills led Boise State past Sacramento State Saturday afternoon as the Broncos rolled to a sweep of the Hornets and the title of the Sacramento State Invitational. For the Broncos, it is the third-straight tournament title they have to open the season, after tying for the championship at the Boise State Invitational to open the campaign.
"It was a really well played match today by our entire squad," said head coach Shawn Garus. "Both middles, Alyssa (Wissinger) and Alli (O'Harra) were really effective today. Lauren (Ohlinger) had her best match of the weekend hitting with a lot of pace and great variety. But what really stood out to me was exceptional defensive play by Jolei (Akima) the tournament MVP."
Jolei Akima was named the tournament MVP while Ohlinger and Alyssa Wissinger made the all-tournament team.
Garus was excited about the team's overall play this weekend, "I'm really happy to win the tournament. I thought our team came out strong to start the tournament with a sweep of Pacific and finished really strong against the host Sacramento State today. This will help build confidence as we head into a tough week at home with some exciting matches in Bronco Gym."
The 25-19, 25-18, 25-13 win was the third sweep of the year and sixth-straight victory for the Blue and Orange as it improved to 8-1 overall. Next up, a home match against 20th-ranked Utah on Monday afternoon in Bronco Gym at 3:30 p.m.
Boise State dominated the match trailing only once in the entire contest at 3-2 in the second set. The Broncos grew stronger as the match wore on, finishing with a .320 hitting percent and tallying 11 blocks, while holding Sacramento State to .133 percent.
The Broncos hit .452 percent in the first set and .419 percent in the third, they hit only .146 in the second period but still managed to win the set by seven points.
Ohlinger hit a season-high .419 percent for 15 kills with one service ace, five digs, two block assists and team-best 17.0 points.
Akima led the team defensively along the back line with a team-high 15 digs, along with two service aces and two assists.
Alli O'Harra had a team-second-best nine kills and hit .438 to go with team highs for service aces with three and blocks with six.
