LAS VEGAS – Boise State women's soccer started off Mountain West play with a bang, netting two goals in a 2-0 road victory against UNLV at Peter Johann Field Friday night.
"I thought that was our best all-around performance this season," said head coach Jim Thomas. "I thought it was an impressive collective effort. Typically you only get groups of players that are plugged in together, but if you can get all 22 players to be that in tune with each other like we did tonight it can be so much fun."
A defensive battle defined the first half as each team made a few key plays to keep the score deadlocked at zero heading into the break.
Boise State set the tone early in the second half, applying pressure that tested the Rebel keeper early. In the 63rd-minute Keile Hansen collected the ball in the center of the field and delivered a ball to a running Dorian Goodwin. Goodwin – a Las Vegas native – took the ball and delivered a powerful shot from the outside corner of the penalty box that sailed into the top corner for the opening goal.
Just over a minute later, Sophie Drown set up Kenzie MacMillan who slotted in another goal, and suddenly Boise State was in full control of the match.
Boise State's defense held down the fort for the remainder of the match to secure a 1-0 start in conference play. The Broncos now are unbeaten in their last seven conference-opening matches.
Goalkeeper Sydney Smith secured her 17th career shutout, tying assistant coach Liz Ruiz for second all-time in program history. It was the sixth shutout by the Broncos this season.
Up next Boise State will travel to Reno, Nev., for a matchup against the Nevada Wolf Pack Sunday at 1 p.m. MT.
