ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Nine different Boise State track and field student-athletes captured podium finishes at the 2022 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., Feb. 24-26.
The Broncos concluded the weekend with 10 medals (three gold, five silver and two bronze), the most since 2018 when the Blue and Orange registered 11 medals at the conference meet.
"We competed hard from day one until the end," said head coach Corey Ihmels. "Anytime you have event winners it's a fantastic thing for your program, and we had three event winners today, all exciting finishes. We had some near misses as well. We had several second and third-place finishes. We want to turn those near misses into first-place finishes as we move outdoors."
Freshmen Maggie Larson and Anita Taviore and senior Kristie Schoffield highlighted the Broncos' action-packed weekend, capturing gold in their respective events.
"We had a lot of young people step up," said Ihmels. "It's fun to see someone like Maggie [Larson] who is a freshman capture an event win the first time out. Then, someone like Kristie [Schoffield], who's been here more than one time and has come really close, earns the right to stand atop the podium. It's fun to see both sides of that."
On the outside of podium contention looking in, Larson's gold-medal jump came during her sixth and final attempt, as she posted a personal-record mark of 12.90-meters, the third-longest distance in school history.
Prior to her last jump, the Maple Lake, Minn., native's best attempt was her very first mark of 12.58m. With her 12.90m jump, she surpassed San Diego State's Simone Johnson's leading jump of 12.88m.
Taviore garnered gold in the women's 60m dash en route to setting a school record. Her time of 7.44 narrowly bested Mackenzie Flannigan's 2014 mark of 7.46.
The Lagos, Nigeria native also picked up a silver medal in the women's 200m dash less than an hour after capturing gold, crossing the finish line in a time of 23.76.
Schoffield raced her way to gold in the women's 800m run, pacing the field of eight athletes for the entirety of the race. The senior finished with a time of 2:05.92, edging out her teammate, junior MaLeigha Menegatti.
Menegatti clocked a time of 2:06.88, securing the top-two spots on the podium for the Blue and Orange.
In addition to Taviore and Menegatti's silver-medal finishes, Boise State placed second in three other races over the course of the weekend.
The men's distance medley relay team garnered the Broncos' first podium finish of the weekend, shattering the school record and capturing the silver medal, Thursday night.
The quartet of Henry Mong, David Pierce, Angus Fitzgerald and Jonathan Shields posted a time of 9:44.65, nearly four seconds faster than the previous mark set in 2016 (9:48.34).
This was the third-consecutive podium finish for the Boise State men in the DMR. Both Mong and Shields were members of the Broncos' winning DMR in 2020, and Mong was also a member of the podium-topping team in 2019.
Individually, Shields was the first Bronco to earn medalist honors, finishing second in the men's mile with a time of 4:05.17.
Junior Dafni Georgiou turned in a silver-medal performance in the women's 60m hurdles, posting a time of 8.31, just shy of San Diego State's Danae Dyer's winning time of 8.29.
Freshman Ahmed Ibrahim also left Albuquerque with hardware, taking bronze in the men's 3,000m with a time of 8:09.36.
The women's 4x400m relay closed out the MW Indoor Championships on a high note, collecting Boise State's second bronze medal.
The team of Alyssa Cullen, Taviore, Nyenuchi Okemgbo and Menegatti clocked a time of 3:40.69, crushing the previous record from 2013 (3:44.36).
As a team, the Bronco women finished fourth overall with 73 points, marking their highest finish and most points scored since 2018 when they placed third with 82 points.
On the men's side, the Blue and Orange took seventh, earning 28 points.
"It was a fun few days experiencing these finishes and watching our athletes get better," said Ihmels. "There were lots of positives. I'm excited about where we are and where we are headed."
Next, the Broncos will enjoy a few weeks off before traveling to San Diego, Calif., to open the outdoor track and field season, March 24-26.
