HOUSTON – Late rallies highlighted Boise State softball's doubleheader split at Houston, Thursday.
The Broncos (17-5) won the opener 7-4 before the host Cougars (10-12) captured the nightcap 6-2 in nine innings.
"We started off slowly, but I am proud of the way we bounced back to win the first game," Boise State Head Coach Justin Shults said. "We had a lot of baserunners in the second game and had our chances and Taylor pitched great. We have been on the road for five-straight weeks and our kids are grinding it out. We had a terrific effort."
Boise State trailed 4-0 in game one then scored all of its runs in innings four through six. Alison Seng got the Broncos on the board in the fourth with a two-run home run, her team-leading sixth of the season.
In the fifth, Bella Rocco singled in a run and came home on a wild pitch to tie the game. The Broncos capped the comeback in the sixth on a two-run home run by Serena Huchingson and an RBI-single by Kelsey Lalor.
Sara Johnson (5-1) was stellar in relief of starter Hannah Bailey. Johnson pitched two-hit shutout ball over the final 4 2/3 innings to earn a victory.
The long ball stole the show in game two beginning with Kelsey Hall's home run to lead off the game. Britaney Shaw's two-run home run in the fourth put the Cougars on top 2-1.
The Broncos were down to their last two outs when Jordyn Hutchins homered over the center field wall to tie the game 2-2 and force extra innings.
The Cougars earned the split when Shaw hit a grand slam over Taylor Caudill (6-3).
The Broncos continue their five-game road trip with a matchup against McNeese State at 6 p.m. CT/5 p.m. MT.
