Broncos earn a split on the weekend, fall at Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. - Boise State men's tennis returns home following a weekend split in the Spokane, Wash., metro area after falling 4-0 Sunday at Gonzaga. The loss comes following a 5-2 victory at Eastern Washington on Friday.
Boise State was led on the day by Simon Arca Costas and Caden Moortgat, who won their No. 1 doubles match 6-4 over GU's Sasha Trkulja and Matthew Hollingworth. Unfortunately, neither Bronco completed their singles contest before they were abandoned with the clinching of the team victory. Their doubles win also proved to be the lone victory for the Blue and Orange on Sunday.
But there were other bright spots; all three doubles contests came down to the end before the Bulldogs clinched the team point with a tightly contested 7-6 win in a tiebreaker on court two and a 6-4 victory on court three.
In the three singles matches that went unfinished, all looked like they were going to third sets. After dropping the opening frame, Arca Costas was in a set-two tiebreaker to push his match into a third, 4-6, 6-6; Moortgat lost his first set, then won the second and was up in the third, 1-6, 6-4, 3-1; and James Van Herzeele had rallied from a set down to force his contest into a third, 2-6, 6-3.
But Gonzaga put an end to it all. The Bulldogs clinched the match after winning the doubles point, followed by three straight-set victories in singles on courts one, three and five, respectively. They abandoned the remaining three contests.
The Broncos will return home and take next week off to practice and rest up before starting Mountain West Conference play in Boise the first weekend of April against Nevada and UNLV.
