The Broncos fell to No. 10 Cal, then beat Houston Baptist.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Boise State's beach volleyball team earned a split on Sunday in San Luis Obispo, Calif., falling 5-0 to 10th-ranked Cal, then defeated Houston Baptist 4-1.Â
The Broncos, who started a three-day road trip to California on Saturday at Northridge, are now a combined 3-1 this weekend with two more matches scheduled for Monday in San Luis Obispo versus 12th-ranked Cal Poly — the host school — and Santa Clara. Boise State is now 10-7 overall on the year.Â
Versus the Cal Bears, the No. 2 and 3 pairs led the Broncos by taking their contests to third sets before falling. Rorianna Chartier and Sierra Land rallied from a set down to tie it with a set two victory but were unable to close it out in third as Cal's duo of Ava Mann and Ainsley Radell came back to edge Boise State tandem 21-19, 19-21, 15-8.
The No. 3 team of Boss and Nichols also battled to the end, winning set one before falling in three to Brooke Buchner and Ashley Delgado 19-21, 21-9, 15-12.
In the win over Houston Baptist in the afternoon, the Blue and Orange regrouped to win three pairs in straight sets and a fourth in three. Boss and Nichols recorded the first win, easily defeating Kristen Kleymeyer and Lindsay Harris 21-13, 21-13 to claim their ninth victory of the year.Â
After HBU had tied it up at 1-1, Boise State put it away with wins in the final three contests starting with the No. 5 pair. In their first competition together, Katie Martin and Kaylee Mejia wasted little time notching their first win beating Abbey Reinard and Mary Alper in straight sets 21-13, 21-17 on court five.
Erin Martin and Yasmin Tan made it 3-1 Broncos when they dispatched the Huskies' top duo of Brennan Miller and Maddie Butters 21-13, 21-17. The victory gave the pair seven on the year on court one.
Joey Benson and Emilia Guerra-Acuna won the final match on court four. They rallied from a set down to defeat Danielle Okeke and Shleby O'Neal 19-21, 23-21, 15-9, collecting their eighth win of the season. Â Â
